33 players from across the Old Line State, Pennsylvania, DC, and Virginia participated in this year's Freshman Free Showcase at the Metrix Baseball Training Facility in New Windsor, MD. Players went through in a pro-style workout, took BP and threw bullpens in front of our PBR Maryland staff.
Today we release our evaluations of the eight middle infielders from the event.
THE Middle Infielders

Owen Basso SS / 2B / St Albans, VA / 2023
Body: 5’9’’, 145 pounds. Athletic, lean. Hit: RHH. Balanced, slightly open stance. Small leg kick load with some hand separation. Stays behind the ball well. Short to the ball with a slightly uphill swing path and gets good extension through contact. Showed quick hands and bat speed through the zone. Excellent balance throughout swing, two-handed finish. Power: 81 mph exit velocity from the tee. Gap-to-gap type hitter with sneaky pop to pull side. Arm: RH. INF - 75 mph. Slightly longer arm action throwing from a high three-quarter slot. Throws showed carry. Ability to throw from various angles with accuracy on slow rollers. Defense: Plays loose with active feet, moves well and shows range. Fields the ball out in front and works through the ball with smooth, clean actions. Run: 4.50 home-to-first time.

Cameron Bott SS / 3B / Patuxent , MD / 2023
Body: 5’9’’, 185 pounds. Athletic, strong, muscular. Hit: RHH. Balanced, open stance with a lower handset. Toe tap load with a slight front-side turn. Short, compact swing and level bat path. Showed good balance, cuts finish short. Excellent middle of the field line-drive approach. Power: 77 mph exit velocity from the tee. Occasional pop. Arm: RH. INF - 67 mph. Short arm action throwing from a lower three-quarter slot. Defense: Controlled approach to the ball, strong, athletic base. Fields the ball close to body funneling to chest. Works through the ball and taps glove in exchange. Run: 4.26 home-to-first time.

Josh Erd SS / Wootton, MD / 2023
Body: 5’10’’, 145 pounds. Athletic Hit: RHH. Balanced, open stance. Smooth, controlled, load with a toe-tap and some hand separation. Strong lower half and stays short to the ball with quick hands and fast bat speed through the zone. Stays behind the ball well and swings with intent. Gets good extension past contact and finishes strong with two hands. Showed a nice middle of the field line drive approach. Power: 78 mph exit velocity from the tee. Gap-to-gap pop. Arm: RH. INF - 80 mph. Short arm action throwing from a high three-quarter slot. Ability to throw from various arm angles depending on the type of play. Defense: Works through the ball with active feet. Fields the ball out in front with a quick exchange. Athletic set-up and base. Feet are always moving towards the target. Run: 4.32 home-to-first time.

Felix Hermida 2B / SS / Global Vision Christian, PA / 2023
Body: 5’8’’, 145 pounds. Athletic Hit: RHH. Balanced, open stance. Showed a couple different loads (high leg kick / controlled toe-tap). Creates good hand separation during load. Loose hands and a long, level swing path. Balanced, one-handed finish. Worked middle of the field, line drive type hitter. Power: 74 mph exit velocity from the tee. Arm: RH. INF - 61 mph. Throws with short arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Defense: Works through the ball in the infield with clean actions. Fields it out in front from an athletic set-up. Smooth, clean exchange from glove to throwing hand. Taps glove to gather before throw. Run: 4.93 home-to-first time.

Max Lawson SS / RHP / Briar Woods, VA / 2025
Body: 5’6’’, 118 pounds. Athletic Hit: Switch. Balanced, square stance form the left side. Smooth back-load and minimal stride. Short to the ball with a level swing path. Stays behind the ball well with good balance and a two-handed finish. Similar set-up and swing from the right side. Starts slightly open from the right side and gets more of an uphill swing path. Same smooth back-load and minimal stride. Showed more pop from the right side of the plate. Line drive type hitter with a gap-to-gap approach. Power: 70 mph exit velocity from the tee. Arm: RH. INF - 64 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a mid three-quarter slot. Defense: Works through the ball and fields it out in front with clean actions. Slight glove tap in gather, moves well. Run: 4.78 home-to-first time.

Aidan Niemerski SS / 2B / Montgomery Blair HS, MD / 2023
Body: 5’9’’, 140 pounds. Athletic Hit: RHH. Balanced, square stance. Smooth back load with a small leg kick. Creates good hand separation. Short to the ball with a level swing path and some lower half involvement. Creates some bat speed through the zone. Stays on the ball well showing excellent balance and a one-handed finish. Gap-to-gap approach, uses the whole field. Power: 77 mph exit velocity from the tee. Occasional pop. Arm: RH. INF - 73 mph. Throws with short arm action from a three-quarters slot. Defense: Plays with active feet and gets around the ball. Athletic base and fields the ball out in front funneling to chest. Smooth, clean actions. Works through the ball, keeping feet moving and momentum going towards the target. Run: 4.86 home-to-first time.

Jose Puig SS / 2B / Global Vision Christian School , FL / 2023
Body: 5’7’’, 145 pounds. Athletic Hit: RHH. Balanced, slightly open stance. Controlled, small leg kick load. Short to the ball and stays compact. Slightly uphill swing path, gets extension past contact and finishes with one-hand. Gap-to-gap line drive type hitter. Power: 72 mph exit velocity from the tee. Arm: RH. INF - 78 mph. Shorter arm action throwing from a mid three-quarters slot. Showed ability to throw from various arm angles based upon the type of play. Defense: Plays loose with active feet and works through the ball. Fields the ball out in front, quick transfer, slight glove tap in gather. Run: 4.67 home-to-first time.

Gage Strucko 2B / SS / Briar Woods, VA / 2025
Body: 5’4’’, 110 pounds. Athletic Hit: RHH. Balanced, athletic, slightly open stance with a wider base. Quiet, minimal stride, hands preloaded. Short to the ball with a slightly uphill bat path. Quick hands, and gets good extension through contact with solid lower half involvement. Stays behind the ball well, two handed finish. Line drive type hitter with a very nice middle of the field approach. Used the whole field well during BP rounds. Power: 63 mph exit velocity from the tee. Arm: RH. INF - 65 mph. Throws with short arm action form a mid three-quarter slot. Defense: Works through the ball in the infield fielding it out in front from an athletic base. Showed really quick, clean exchanges and keeps feet active working towards the target. Run: 5.03 home-to-first time.
