Florida Five: 2017 Future Games Team Florida Sleepers

By Doug Freeman
Florida Scouting Director

The Future Games is the premier underclass event in the country, with 400 uncommitted underclassman coming together on 20 different teams for four day at Grand Park in Indiana. 2017 was the first year Florida was represented by an entire team. 20 of the top uncommitted prospects in the 2019 and 2020 classes participated in the four day event that included a workout day and three games. While all of the players showed why they deserved to be there, these five players are our sleepers who played well, but may make big jumps in the future.

Luis Ruiz SS / 3B / Brito Miami, FL / 2019

The 5-foot-11, 155-pound middle infielder may be a 2019, but he looks extremely young. He is an average runner, but uses a quick first step, and ability to use efficient angles to create above average range in the infield. He projects as an above average defender and should have enough arm strength to stay at short. Offensively, he has an upright setup and although does not have much separation, he creates a short, level swing through the zone. He is one of two players have a hit in all three games and consistently find the barrel. As he continues to mature and become stronger, the defense will continue to play at a high level and the bat-to-ball skills should translate into an above average hit tool. Overall, he will have a chance to make some big jumps in the future
