Florida Burn 2016 Fall Tryouts: 2020/2021 Standouts
August 18, 2016
By PBR Florida Staff
This past weekend PBR Florida covered the 2016 Florida Burn Fall Tryouts which showcased nearly 200 players either previously with the Florida Burn or some looking to make a team in the fall. The players ran through a pro-style workout which included infield/outfield, batting practice, and a game on both days as well as some instruction and simulated game action to fill in for some pitchers on day two.
Through the course of the weekend, the PBR Florida Staff had the chance to bear down on players from the 2017-2021 classes. Our scouting staff sat down and evaluated all of the performances over the course of the weekend and below are the reports from the 2020/2021s who stood out:
Zach Thomas. MIF/RHP. Cypress Lake Middle, FL (2020)
5-foot-8, 145 pounds on a lean frame. Showed smooth actions and was 76 mph across the infield. Has a quick first step showing the ability to range both forehand and backhand while also showing a strong enough arm to stay at short for now. He plays with confidence, fitting in with players two and three years older than he is, defensively playing under control and offensively sticking to his gap to gap approach. Had three hits on day one with a short, level swing with above average feel for the barrel for his class. With the present tools and expecting him to continue to grow and get stronger, expect him to continue to be an above average middle infielder with some gap-to-gap power. Sat 77-79 with his fastball, touching 80 along with a curveball at 65 mph and a change up that sat 70-71 mph.
Mac Guscette. C/3B/RHP. Venice HS, FL (2020)
5-foot-10, 165 pounds with a solid, athletic frame for his age. Moves well behind the plate and had a 2.0-2.01 second pop time on his throws down to second that were accurate. Good instincts, comfortable player. Fastball sat 79-81 mph with some life, touching 82 while mixing in a 70 mph change up. Makes the plays in the field, strong arm from third base. Took solid rounds of batting practice that featured multiple line drives into the gaps. All around solid player.
Devin Perez. LHP/OF. Jesuit, FL (2020)
5-foot-11, 145 pounds with a tall, skinny frame with room to grow. On the mound, he throws from an over the top arm slot with a fastball at 74-77 mph with some run. In the outfield, covers a lot of ground and gets good jumps. At the plate, he utilizes his entire body in his swing. Tends to pull off some but has the bat path and quickness in his hands to square it up.
