Florida 2023 Rankings Update

Rocco Iervasi
Florida Director of Operations/Area Scout

The Holidays are here and what better way to get into the Holiday Spirit then with a rankings update. Last week our National 2023 rankings were updated and 9 players from the Sunshine State appeared in the top 50 in the country. That says a lot about how talented this 2023 class is, and the depth in this class is even better. With that being said, take a look at what has changed in Florida.

1 and 2 remain the same since our August update with two of the best pure hitters in the state in Aidan Miller (Arkansas) and Braden Holcomb (Vanderbilt). Two physical third baseman who have hit at every level we have seen them. They both move well for their size and have two-way upside on the mound as well. Miller and Holcomb headline an extremely talented 2023 class in Florida.

At No. 3 comes a player who continues to rise every time we update these rankings in SS/RHP Landen Maroudis (NC State) from Calvary Christian. You don’t always find a two-way player who can truly be a two-way at the next level, but Maroudis is one of them. He has the ability to be a front line starting pitcher with his fastball up to 93 mph and above average secondary stuff. He can also be your 3-hole hitter and every day shortstop at the next level. Maroudis has put in the work and become one of the most talented 2023’s in the country.

At No. 4 remains LHP/OF
Wes Mendes. A Vanderbilt commit from Jesuit, Mendes continues to get stronger and be a threat on both sides of the ball. A true center fielder with tremendous ball skills in the outfield. Right handed hitter with potential for power to all fields and consistently finds barrels. Mendes rounds out his skillset with a low 90s fastball from the left side as his two-way upside is real.

Rounding out the top 5 for the first time is SS Arjun Nimmala. A Florida State commit from Strawberry Crest, Nimmala has really tapped into his power potential with added strength to his frame. His glove has been above average for a while, but the bat is what has allowed him to make such a significant jump. Really like the ceiling that he continues to inch closer to.

Biggest Risers

Liam Peterson, RHP, Calvary Christian

Peterson has made a huge jump and now sits at No. 8 in the state. A new transfer to Calvary Christian and should make an immediate impact in their rotation. Has gotten much stronger and now stands 6-foot-5, 195 pounds. Fastball up to 94 mph with a changeup and new slurve to pair. The Florida commit looks the part of a front line starter at the next level.

Andrew Duncan, OF, A3 Academy

Duncan put on a show at the 2021 Junior State Games. 6-foot-1, 180 pound tremendous athlete ran a 6.22 laser timed 60. He showed an electric arm from the outfield up to 94 mph. Barreled everything in bp and took it to the game where he found gaps the entire weekend and used his speed on the bases. Duncan can really impact the game on different levels and FSU will have a good one once he steps on campus.

Hunter Dietz, LHP, Calvary Christian

Despite losing his older brother Tyler and Jack Cebert, Calvary Christian still returns a tremendous pitching staff in 2022 and Hunter will be a big part of it. Dietz has transformed his body in a big way. Has leaned down a bit and added strength. A big jump in velo came this year as the 6-foot-6, 245 pound southpaw now runs his fastball up to 91 mph. Really impressed with the work Dietz has put in and it has translated to the mound. The USF commit jumps 50 spots up to No. 20 in the state.

Alex Sosa, C, Viera

The 2020 Future Gamer and now NC State commit has really made a nice jump physically. Added strength has allowed him to tap into some power potential while allowing him to spray the ball hard gap to gap. Sosa impressed behind the plate when we first saw him in early 2020 and he has continued to get better back there. Works well with his pitchers, soft hands receiving with good flexibility behind the plate. Sosa is a strong blocker and his catch and throw is above average with consistent 1.90-2.00 pop times. Sosa moves up to No. 23 in the state and sits as the No. 2 catcher in Florida.
