FL JUCO: Capital City Classic - Scout Notebook
February 12, 2019
PALATKA, FL - Over the week St. Johns River State hosted the 2019 Capital City Bank Classic. This round robin event featured: St. Johns River State, Northwest Florida State, Miami Dade, Broward College, Gulf Coast State, and Florence-Darlington Tech.
On Thursday, we were in attendance to see Northwest Florida State RHP Thomas Farr (South Carolina recruit) face off against St. Johns River State RHP Anthony Simonelli (Virginia Tech recruit). Farr looked the part of one of the top JUCO prospects in the country, running his fastball up to 95 mph and showcasing a potent changeup and curveball. Simonelli responded by limiting a strong Raider offense to three runs over 6.2 innings, leaving the game trailing by one run. St. Johns River State would force the game to extras thanks to a solo home run by OF Michael Rosario. However, a pair of Illinois natives, INF Mikey Madej and OF Kyle Fitzgerald produced back-to-back hits and RBI to give the Raiders a 5-3 lead, one they would not relinquish.
Friday, Northwest Florida State OF/1B Jake Randa (Mississippi State recruit) showed why he is one of the top JUCO bats in the country. Over four games, the left-handed hitter went 13-for-17 with five doubles, one home run and six RBI.
We also had the privilege of seeing Gulf Coast State College RHP Brett Wisely (South Florida recruit) attack Broward College for nine straight innings as he tossed a complete game shutout. Wisely struck out 14 batters while walking none, and finished the game by retiring the final 17 batters in order.
