FL Insider: Top 2016 Uncommitted Players

With the 2015-2016 school year getting under way, we would like to highlight a few of the top uncommitted 2016 players in Florida who are not only good enough to make it to the next level, but good enough to make an impact with a respectable college program. There are a lot of perks to playing in the Sunshine State, such as competing against quality competition, being able to play all year around, and being instructed by some of the best coaches around the country. However, with this large population of very good players, a few guys who (very likely) would have been committed to division I schools by now in almost every other state have, to some degree, slipped through the cracks in the early recruiting process. Here are a few of the best uncommitted 2016 players in Florida:

Camryn Williams SS/3B, Gaither HS 2016

Ranked at number 27 in Florida, Williams stands at 6-foot-2, 190 pounds with a loose, live, athletic, and projectable body. He possesses good actions with softness in his hands and plenty of arm to stay on the left side of the infield. Camryn has quickness in his bat with average type power. He has a loose bat from both sides of the plate and is a very athletic kid. His whole game will improve with added strength and he has a high ceiling as is father, Reggie, played in the big leagues. Camryn also had a big summer that drew attention from multiple division I schools, so we should not surprised if he commits in the near future.

Anthony Gonnella 1B/3B, Riverview HS 2016

Ranked at number 78 in Florida, Gonnella stands at 6-foot-4, 210 pounds with a tall, lean, strong, and projectable frame. He has plenty of room to fill out and add muscle. From first base he has a solid arm and soft hands that allow him to be reliable on anything hit his way and pick up low throws. At the plate he is slightly open, gets a separation for his load, and has a small leg kick. Anthony is relaxed and quiet and possesses an easy, short swing with a slight upper cut. He has good bat speed and the ball jumps off his bat. Gonnella had a very strong spring and is the type of bat that translates well to the next level.

Tyler Mattes RHP/OF, Cardinal Mooney

Ranked at number 94 in Florida, Mattes stands at 6-foot-1, 190 pounds with a lean, athletic, and strong body with very strong legs. He has big league bloodlines as his uncle pitched for the Expos. He throws three pitches for strikes and possesses a very good changeup that he throws in all counts. With his changeup, he keeps the same arm speed and spin as his fastball and it dives late at 72-75 mph. He has a decent curveball that has some depth and a ¾ break that he throws for strikes at 72-74 mph. Tyler’s fastball sits at 85-88 mph and he has very good size in his family so he is likely still growing. His velocity should increase with maturity. Mattes also can swing the bat well and runs a 6.8 so he could be a legitimate two-way guy at the next level.
