Elite Squad 2018 Summer Tryouts/Prospect Games Standouts
January 12, 2018
This past weekend one of the top organizations in the nation, Elite Squad, held their 2018 Summer Tryouts/Prospect Games at Nova Southeastern University for players from the 2019-2022 classes. Over a three day stretch which included bullpens, pro-style workouts, and scrimmages, the 300+ participants were able to showcase their skills to earn a spot on the Elite Squad roster for this coming summer.
While there were multiple players in attendance who stood out in some capacity, below are 18 standouts with report and video who impressed during the three day event:
DEVIN FUTRELL LHP / OF / AMERICAN HERITAGE, FL / 2021Vanderbilt recruit. Stands at 6-foot-3, 160 pounds on a very projectable frame with natural athleticism and an above average feel for the game. Futrell stands out all over the field, but on the mound he really impressed as he struck out all five batters he faced during the scrimmage. He has a loose, easy working arm and featured a fastball that sat 80-82 mph with run along with a 68-70 mph curveball that showed depth and shape, throwing it for strikes. At times throughout his windup he has a slight pause in his leg kick, looking to throw off the timing of opposing batters. More velocity to come as he continues to fill out his frame and mature. At the plate, he has an uphill path through the zone and creates leverage with his long limbs by showing pull side pop. From the outfield he surrounds the ball and gets behind his throws with accuracy from an over the top release. High follow prospect who will continue to see jumps in his overall game as he continues to add to his frame and matures.
