Draft League Spotlight: Rene Lastres

Mike Rosenbaum
Senior Prospect Analyst

Player: Rene Lastres
Position: C/1B
School: Calvary Christian Academy HS (Fla.)

The state of Florida’s top-ranked prep catcher and a Gators commit, Lastres boasts a collection of loud tools and has handled some of the top pitching prospects in the country this season at Calvary Christian. At 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, Lastres has a strong, compact athletic frame. At the plate, the right-handed hitter makes loud, barrelled contact, generating recorded exit velocities and distances up to 105.72 mph and 411 feet, respectively (Feb. ‘21). He combines physical strength and bat speed to produce projectable raw power that plays to his pull side during games. That Lastres is also an impressive athlete for his size -- 7.1-second runner in the 60 -- helps him behind the plate, where he earns high marks for his blocking, receiving and catch-and-throw skills -- the latter being a product of his recorded 1.85-1.95-second pop times and strong arm (81 mph).
