You know you are having a day when everything is falling for you as a player. Every at bat leads to a base hit. You take four trips to the plate and you produce four knocks, the ultimate 4 for 4 day. South Florida High School Baseball experienced this feat at Jet Blue Stadium in the FHSAA State Finals.
Leading the way were the Bucs from South Dade. The Buccaneers open the championship barrage with a 3 to 1 victory over Bloomingdale to capture the 8A crown and their first state title in Baseball. Coach Fred Burnside who is an icon in the Miami-Dade baseball community captures his first state championship in his 40 year career. South Dade Athletics were the talk of the county in 2014. Championship trophies in football, wrestling, and baseball will adorn the hallways of the Homestead school.
In the 7A title game it was the Patriots of American High that brought the second championship of the year to Miami-Dade County. American scored a 5-2 victory over East Lake HS to accomplish the mission that was set forth at the beginning of the 2014 campaign.
In 2013 American was bounced out of the state tourney in the 8A classification. This year they competed in the 7A classification. The Pats had to get by tradition baseball powers Palm Beach Dywer and St. Thomas Aquinas. This squad was led by RHP Ronnie Williams, Romy Gonzalez(UM Commit), Alejandro Blanco, and closer Andy Figueroa.
In the 2A class, the Panthers of Brito Miami did what they’ve done repeatedly. Brito captured its’ sixth state title with a convincing 14-2 victory over Seacreast Country Day. The Panthers snapped an eight year championship draught with the victory.
With South Dade, American, and Brito already celebrating and back home in Miami it was up to Mater Academy to bring out the brooms and produce the championship sweep. Mater did not disappoint. The Lions won in a nail bitter 1-0 over Winter Haven. The old adage the pitching and defense wins championship was personified in the 6A Title game. Kevin Fuentes dealt for Mater and dominated the Winter Haven lineup all day. Four championship games produced four championships. Pretty awesome and plainly stated, pretty dominant.
