Beard Dominates in Shutout Win for Dunedin
March 11, 2022
Dunedin, FL - I headed down to the beautiful TD Ballpark last night in Dunedin, the Spring Home of the Toronto Blue Jays. The matchup was between Dunedin High School hosting 6-0 East Lake High School.
Dunedin started their ace in 2023 LHP Trey Beard. The FAU recruit was spectacular for the Falcons. Beard worked a three pitch mix with the fastball up to 87 mph and generated a ton of swings and misses. He held a no hitter going into the 7th but was broken up by the leadoff batter.
On the other side, 2022 RHP Nathan Norwood started for East Lake. The Flagler commit ran his fastball up to 89 mph. Norwood’s outing started a bit shaky with a few walks and hits given up, but he eventually settled in nicely with 6 innings pitched, 2 runs given up, and 8 strikeouts.

Norwood put together a solid outing after a shaky start. Up to 89 mph with the fastball striking out 8 in 6 innings of work.

2022 Jessiah Branch got Dunedin on the scoreboard in the 2nd when he drove an RBI double to right center. Branch would later score on a delayed steal of home making the score 2-0.
Going into their final ABs in the 7th without having recorded a hit yet, 2024 Jayden Harriel broke up Beard’s no hitter, lacing a double down the left field line. The Eagles stranded 2 runners in the 7th and were unable to get on the scoreboard as Dunedin would take this one 2-0. Beard finished with a complete game shutout allowing just 1 hit with 8 strikeouts.

Harriel breaks up the Dunedin no hitter in the 7th. Strength plays throughout the frame. Able to get the hands extended and lace a double down the LF line. #FutureGames Alum.@ShooterHunt @PBRFlorida pic.twitter.com/Wn22YJRWaR
Scout Notes
2023 Trey Beard, LHP, Dunedin (FAU)
This was my first time seeing Beard pitch and it was impressive. Long, lean frame at 6-foot-2, 170 pounds. Works a slow tempo to the plate which messes with hitters rhythm, but is balanced and athletic to the plate. Comes from a tough over-the-top arm slot. Beard worked a fastball/changeup combo for most of the night but later mixed in a 12/6 curveball. Beard sat 84-86 mph with the fastball and topped 87 once or twice. His max spin rate on the fastball was 2410 rpm. I was really impressed by Beard’s willingness to use the changeup in any count. A slow, fading pitch at 70-72 mph is going to be a very good pitch going forward. The changeup constantly created soft contact and swings and misses. Beard later introduced a 63-66 mph 12/6 curveball with downhill tumbling action. Beard was outstanding last night going 7 innings of shutout ball. He allowed just 1 hit with 2 walks and 8 strikeouts. Beard will continue to be high on my radar with much more in the tank as he adds strength to his frame.
