When Anthony Holubecki (Kaneland HS) first performed at a Prep Baseball Report event, he was a gangly 6-foot, 160-pound eighth grader. At that Future Prospect Showcase for junior high players, Holubecki sat 71-75 with his fastball.
Fast forward 19 months to July, 2013, at the PBR Class of 2016 Top Prospect Games at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Holubecki had grown four inches, added 25 pounds, and his mid-70s fastball … well, it was now topping out at 89 mph. At an event that featured many of the top rising sophomores from Illinois at Wisconsin, Holubecki clearly earned the top pitching honors at the event.
Holubecki’s rapid ascension from scrawny eighth-grader to one of the premier prospects in the Midwest paid off when he verbally committed to Notre Dame over the weekend.
Holubecki, who’s ranked No. 4 in Illinois’ 2016 class and No. 12 overall, is the second Illinois sophomore to name his school, joining Geneva SS Nick Derr (Florida State).
