Boston College ‘The Right Choice’ For Masse

MANCHESTER, Ct. - The idea of being part of a college baseball program has been a dream for Easton Masse. A commitment to Boston College leaves the Westminster Prep junior excited about what lies ahead.

“I’m looking forward to playing baseball every day,” related Masse, whose father is an assistant hitting coach in the major leagues for the Padres. “I’ve been around my dad in the pros and that’s what I want to do every single day.”

The opportunity at BC came about this fall.

“They didn’t actually see me until summer ball was over,” Masse explained. “They saw some PBR videos, some in-game video sent to them and they watched some BP. They watched me at the Area Codes and called the day after that. I went down on a visit and that was it.”

An offer came on the visit and not long after Masse accepted.

“I went to see East Carolina and their practice and then to BC and their practice,” the fourth-rated 2025 catcher in New England noted. “I like the way they run practice and the community they have there at BC.”

The decision to attend Boston College capped off a recruiting process for Masse in which “my phone blew up” on Aug. 1, with Northeastern, UConn, Ohio State, Miami Florida and Oklahoma State showing interest in the 15th-ranked junior in Connecticut.

“PBR definitely helped,” Masse said of his recruitment, which was highlighted by the Future Games at the end of July. “They saw videos and pretty much all of them were from PBR. That brought a ton of exposure.

“But it was definitely stressful. Coaches want to jump on a call, then want you to go to a camp to see you again. That’s stressful. But there was a lot to like. My relationship with East Carolina and Boston College coaches was really good.”

The 41st-rated 2025 in New England made an impression on BC.

“They like my catching,” the 5-11 175-pounder related. “That’s always my go-to. Whenever I have a bad game hitting it’s not going to affect me behind the plate. I’m always there.”

Being a catcher is something Masse began at a young age.

“I was seven or eight,” the second-ranked junior catcher in Connecticut reflected. “Once I started catching, I never stopped. You’re in every play. I love being in every play and working with the pitchers.”

The idea of doing it at the next level has been a goal.

“I’ve always thought about college baseball,” Masse said. “I’ve gone to BC games against UConn and to hockey games there. I fell in love on the visit. I stayed in touch with the coach since Aug. 1 texting most every day up ’til October.”

Improvement was vital in earning a chance to play after his days at Westminster come to an end.

“I’ve definitely gotten better since last summer,” Masse pointed out. “This past high school season I was unbelievable behind the plate but weak hitting. Then it flipped during high school. I went to a short, more simple approach, and it clicked.”

But it’s his play behind the plate that is still his bread-and-butter.

“I’m going to bring them the best catching they’re going to see,” Masse said. “That’s my strong suit.”

Masse, who lives an hour and 45 minutes away from BC, pointed to his father as his biggest influence.

“My dad has always been by my side,” Masse said. “He’s always been my hitting coach. He’s helped me with my hitting since I was born.”

To be able to continue playing the game longer with a college commitment is a great feeling according to Maase.

“It was awesome, I had so many texts congratulating me,” Masse said about making his decision to become part of the Atlantic Coast Conference program official. “I’m relieved to get it over, the calls from people wanting to see me one more time. I feel I definitely made the right choice.”
