ELLINGTON, Ct. - A 45-minute phone conversation was all it took for Frank Mozzicato to decide on his college future.
“My high school coach set it up,” Mozzicato said of his phone call to the University of Connecticut that was initiated by East Catholic head coach Martin Fiori. “He’s close to coach (Jim) Penders and said to call him. We talked for 45 minutes to an hour on baseball, academics and what I need to improve. He then gave an offer.” In the eyes of Mozzicato, the decision was a no-brainer. “He had never talked to me but my mom went to college there and I knew right away what I’d do if the offered,” the 61st-rated 2021 in New England admitted. UConn had seen the 6-2 160-pound left-hander pitch during a high school game in the spring and at the Top Prospect Games in mid-June, where Mozzicato was judged to have the Best 3-Pitch Mix during the afternoon session. “I pitched pretty well,” Mozzicato said about the TPGs. “I faced eight batters and had seven strikeouts and a ground out. My fastball wasn’t bad, my curve was on and I threw a change once in awhile to get the hitters off-balanced.” It led to interest from schools like Boston College, Bryant and Northeastern in addition to UConn. “They said they saw me in the outfield and saw my athleticism,” Mozzicato, who also participated in the position portion of the event, said about Connecticut. “They also liked how I was pitching in warmups .. fluid and how my path was.” It helped lead to the phone conversation and eventually a commitment. |
