Trevor Gottsegen OF / 2B / Highlands Ranch, CO / 2025 Rankings  StateRank: 1 / POS: 1 OverallRank: 139 / POS: 22 Gottsegen is a 2023 Future Games alumni that was committed to a Division I program in the fall of last year. After deep consideration and a de-commitment process this spring, Gottsegen is now committed to the University of Utah. This Q&A is geared towards helping other student athletes understand the recruiting process and potentially help them make the right decision for the next level. While every situation and prospect is different, we saw the #1 ranked 2025 prospect in Colorado take a unique path to what he believes is now his perfect home. Gottsegen provides some high-end athleticism while having the ability to play both centerfield and shortstop with feel. This summer, Gottsegen has gotten even better thanks to some exit velocities in the triple digits with a 60 yard dash time under 6.5. We have also seen Gottsegen register up to an 81 mph bat speed while his arm defensively can throw around 90 mph. The high-waisted athlete has an elite hit tool and one of the highest ceilings we've seen within the state over the last few years. In spring 2024, Gottsegen hit .440 with 4 HR, 3 3B, 5 2B, a 1.438 OPS, and 6 stolen bases across 65 plate appearances.

OUR Q&A:

Prep Baseball: What were you looking for out of a college program after your de-commitment? What mindset changed?

Gottsegen: After reopening my recruitment the biggest thing I looked for in a school was development throughout the whole program. As soon as I was able to see how the coaching staff at Utah operates, it made my decision very easy.

Prep Baseball: Did location play a factor in your decision?

Gottsegen: The location did play a big factor the second through the process. One of the reasons I de-committed from Iowa was geography, so finding somewhere closer to home was very important to my family and I.

Prep Baseball: What advice would you give to your younger self just beginning the recruiting process?

Gottsegen: I would tell myself to be patient. My last decision I jumped the gun a little bit and ended up regretting it, so I would just tell myself to let the process play out and evaluate my opportunities a little closer.

Prep Baseball: Did you develop any new processes to help more coaches learn about you?

Gottsegen: Developing relationships with the coaches was important for me. I feel this is pivotal because of how college baseball is now. Coaches can end up anywhere, people move around a lot nowadays in college baseball so it’s important to create these relationships in case you cross paths again in the future. 

Prep Baseball: What were the key factors in making your final decision?

Gottsegen: I thought that it was very important that the coaching staff wanted me as badly as I wanted to go to play for them. I’ve always wanted to be a 'Ute' so it was not a very hard decision at all. I also saw amazing character throughout the coaching staff as well. I really connected well with the entire staff while I was there.

Prep Baseball: What other schools were on your shortlist before your final decision?

Gottsegen: Utah, Loyola Marymount, BYU, Oregon, Long Beach State, and a few other schools in the Mountain West conference were the last schools I talked to.

Prep Baseball: Preview your high school team’s season for us. How do you feel your team will be? What do you want out of your senior year?

Gottsegen: I think we’re going to surprise some people this year. We’ve had some kids make big jumps off the mound and I feel that’s what we needed to happen for us to be a competitive team. For me this year, I just want to make sure I’m as versatile as I can be on the field and get on base more than I ever have.

Prep Baseball: Any closing thoughts for anyone who is or will be in your position?

Gottsegen: One important thing I learned through this process is to take plenty of visits. When I took my visit to Utah, and I saw the coaching staff in person along with Salt Lake City, I pretty much knew it was home and that’s what led to my decision.
