Prep Baseball Report

Top 2018 Exit Velocities

Jeff Markle
Assistant State Director

PBR Colorado strives to be the most comprehensive source of player information across the state. The Prep Baseball Report is the No. 1 resource for high school baseball in each state we cover through our variety of events, boots-on-the-ground scouting staff, daily coverage, and multimedia platforms. Our multimedia platforms and events work in tandem, ultimately creating the most powerful source of high school baseball promotion in each state.  While other organizations take a national approach, our goal is to become the authoritative voice on the ground level of each state.

We recently did a series on the top uncommitted pop-times, 60-times, arm velos, and exit velocities. Now we are doing a series on our Top 5 overall numbers for each class.

2018 Top Exit Velocities:

Tanner O’Tremba, Cherry Creek, OF/RHP (Texas Tech)
Exit Velocity: 97
A 6-foot-0, 210-pound right hand hitter. O'Tremba has a motor that doesn't turn off. In the Top Prospect Games he went a total of 5-6, but what impressed the PBR staff was his hustle double off a routine single. O'Tremba ran a 6.9 laser timed 60, the 3rd fastest time at the event. At the plate he hits from a slightly open stance and uses a leg kick for timing now to come square.  He shows extremely quick hands to the ball, and good hip rotation at contact.  He registered a showcase best 96 MPH exit velocity (We have had at 97 in past events). In the field he is smooth through the ball and has a good over the top delivery. Ranges very well going back on ball stealing what looked like a no-brainer double.  He had an 84 MPH arm velocity from, O'Tremba is one of the top players to follow in the 2018 class.

Jordan Medina, Highlands Ranch, C/RHP (Northern Colorado)
Exit Velocity: 93
6-foot-1, 190 pounds. Bats and throws right. Medina can be a No. 1 catcher, and a No. 1 pitcher for any varsity team in 2017. On the mound show a lot of potential to be a D-1 pitcher. In the past when we have seen Medina he has had a hard time throwing strikes but in this outing went 2 innings and was in the strike zone and had a very solid outing. Strong leg drive in-line towards plate. Hides ball well in back side and brings 86-87 mph fastball from high 3/4 arm slot. Curveball has tight spin sitting between 68-70 mph. Good arm speed. Change sits 75-75 mph from same arm speed. Fastball projects to be 90+ senior year. At the plate has a lot of movement to be ready to hit. Has very good bat speed with a 93 mph exit velo. Timing hitter. Has plus power with pull tendencies. Behind the plate has very little movement when framing. Depends on strong arm down to 2nd at 80 mph. Pop-time lives 1.99-2.03. Improving speed with 7.29 60. A lot of tools to help at next level.

Wilson Helton, Mountain Vista, C
Exit Velocity: 92
6-foot, 180 pound. Bats and throws right. Stance is slightly wide, hands load straight back, slight leg kick as timing. Good lower half rotation. Armed with good bat speed through the zone that produces a 92 mph exit velocity off the tee. Timing type of hitter.   When framing exaggerates glove trigger at times, but frames well and gains good ground on throws that are accurate to bag. Quick arm release and gains good ground to 2nd. Pop time off pitcher came in at 1.95 throwing 77 mph. Ran a 7.40 laser timed 60. Solid 2018 prospect.

Jun Choi, Cherry Creek, C/3B
Exit Velocity: 91
5-foot-11, 185 pounds. Bats and throws right. Really like his approach at plate. Balanced stance with good bat speed through extension.  Lower body works well with upper body in swing. Gap to gap power. During games showed a lot of patience at plate, and would foul off balls until got a pitch to handle (Double with bases loaded). 91 mph exit velocity off a tee. Frames well and is comfortable receiving. Has slight delay in throwing motion that could improve 2.25 pop-time if disappears. Ran a 7.87 60 time.

Zac Heisler, Pine Creek, 1B/OF
Exit Velocity: 91
6-foot-3, 200 pounds. Bats right, throws left. Big, strong, raw athletic player who could move up in the 2018 rankings. Stands tall at the plate and has some good power potential. Toe-tap stride, hands load straight back, can wrap back back sometimes, but generates good power. Good extension through ball on firm front side. Could even get more of his lower back side rotated through swing. Generated a 91 mph exit velo off the tee. Needs to to work on footwork in the outfield. Throws uphill to from right to 3rd at 72 mph. Like his frame on the mound. Pretty smooth and effortless. Everything in-line towards the plate. Could generate more momentum towards plate. Looks like he stops arm a little before release which stalls arm action. Slows arm down a bit on curveball. Fastball was 74-76. Curve was 64-66. Ran a 7.07 60 time. Like his projectability.
