The Prep Baseball Report’s Junior Sunbelt Tryout took place on April 24th at ThunderRidge High School. 54 prospects showed up and strutted their stuff in a pro-style workout. Over the next several days the PBR Scouting staff will roll out position-by-position analysis of the event. We continue our look at this event with the Outfield position.

Outfield Analysis (Listed Alphabetically)

Colby Carlson, Fort Collins High School, 2017
A 5-foot-11, 165-pound right hand hitting OF/RHP who ran a 7.30 60.  At the plate he is open and narrow. A high leg kick and long stride bring him square.  He hits off a solid front side with good hip rotation, swing path is slightly uphill and he registered an 87 MPH exit velocity off a tee.  In the field he moves well to balls left and right, he throws from an over the top angle with good accuracy to the bag.  Arm velocity was 79 MPH.  On the mound he gets slightly past balanced and lands in-line with the plate.  Delivery is over the top with the same arm speed on all pitches.  Fastball was 78 MPH and he added a 65 MPH curve with sweeping break and a 67-68 MPH change down in the zone.

Eric Cox, Cherokee Trail High School, 2017
A 5-foot-10, 205-pound right hand hitting OF/RHP who ran a 6.90 60.  Starts open at the plate with a slight leg kick and long stride to get even.  Aggressive weight transfer and quick hands with a slightly uphill swing path created balls with good carry to the gaps.  He registered a 95 MPH exit velocity off a tee.  In the field he uses his speed to cut balls down.  He is max effort on his release and delivers an 83 MPH ball with accuracy.  On the mound he gets to balance and rocks back before landing in-line with the plate.  He delivers from a high ¾ arm slot and featured an 81 MPH fastball.  He finished with a 68-69 MPH curve with 11/5 break and a 74-75 MPH change.

Derek Cunningham, Boulder High School, 2017
A 6-foot-2, 190-pound right hand hitting OF/RHP who ran a 7.10 60.  At the plate he stands balanced with hands high.  Long stride and bat wrap on the pitch.  Strong weight transfer and good extension out front produced an 86 MPH exit velocity.  Swing path is level through the zone. In the field he uses long strides to cut down the angle.  He throws from a high ¾ release and had an arm velocity of 80 MPH.  On the mound he gets to balance and then drives hard to the plate.  He lands in-line with the plate and falls off to the first base side on his follow through.  His fastball was 82 MPH with good command in and out.  He added a 75 MPH slide and a 76-77 change. 

Garrett Gipson, Grandview High School, 2017
A 5-foot-9, 165-pound right hand hitting OF who ran a 6.68 60. Athletic player with good speed, at the plate he stands slightly open with a long stride for timing.  Hits off his front side with quick hands on the inside pitch.  He showed good control of the bat to all parts of the field with several line drives in the gaps. Exit velocity was 84 MPH off the tee.  In the field he is quick to balls left and right.  Delivers from a high ¾ arm slot with good accuracy to the bag.  Arm velocity was 74 MPH.

Michael Keen, Rock Canyon High School, 2017
A 6-foot-0, 155-pound right hand hitting OF/2B who ran a 6.80 60.  At the plate he is balanced with a slow load back on the pitch.  Strong leg drive and weight transfer on the swing.  Swing path is uphill and the ball had good carry to the left center gap. His exit velocity was 82 MPH.  In the field he gets behind the ball well and comes straight through his throws, arm is over the top and velocity was 74 MPH. 

Bradon O’Connor, Legacy High School, 2017
A 5-foot-10, 153-pound right hand hitting OF/2B who ran a 6.68 60. At the plate he is slightly open with a short stride to get square.  Hands are high in the zone at the start of the swing.  Swing path is slightly uphill with strong rotation at contact.  Exit velocity was 83 MPH off the tee.  Good bat control and lived up the middle during his evaluation round.  In the field he shows smooth actions through the ball.  Release is quick and over the top.  Arm velocity was 83 MPH with accuracy to the bag. 

Ryan Robinson, Grandview High School, 2017
A 6-foot-0, 175-pound right hand hitting OF/RHP who ran a 7.10 60.  At the plate he has a wide balanced stance with a short stride on the pitch.  He shows strong drive with his lower half and good extension out front.  Swing path is flat through the zone with good pull power.  Exit velocity was 92 MPH off the tee.  In the field he glides to the ball and shows max effort on his throws.  He delivers from an over the top arm slot at 86 MPH with accuracy to the bag.  On the mound he is balanced and smooth in his wind up.  He lands in-line with the plate and stays square on his follow through.  Fastball was 84 MPH with good command of both sides of the plate. He also showcased a 67-69 MPH curve with 11/5 break and a 72-73 change. 

Brody Perkins, ThunderRidge High School, 2017
A 6-foot-3, 205-pound right hand hitting OF/C who ran a 7.22 60.  At the plate he stands tall and balance, left and place stride for timing.  Weight moves forward and he hits off a slightly bent front side.  Swing plane is flat with an exit velocity of 88 MPH.  During the live round he hit used all parts of the field and showed good pull power. In the field he glides to the ball and gets in good throwing position.  Delivery is over the top and accurate to the bag.  Arm velocity was 80 MPH. 

Will Smith, ThunderRidge High School 2017
A 6-foot-1, 160-pound right hand hitting OF who ran a 7.51 60.  Stands balanced at the plate with an early stride on the pitch.  Weight stays on his back leg during the swing.  Long arms and a level swing path show good extension at contact.  He had an 83 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he showed good actions fielding through the ball.  He has a quick release from a high ¾ arm slot and registered a 76 MPH arm velocity with accuracy to the bag. 

Quincy Ulrich, ThunderRidge High School, 2017
A 6-foot-2, 175-pound right hand hitting OF/RHP who ran a 7.10 60.  At the plate he stand tall and balanced.  Lift and place stride to start his swing with aggressive weight transfer.  He shows good extension through the ball with a slight uphill swing path.  He registered an 83 MPH exit velocity and showed good ability to get around on the inside pitch.  On the mound he stays compact in his motion.  He drives hard to the plate and stay in-line through the delivery.  He showed good command of all three pitches.  He was slated to start the next day so velocity was down, but control and mechanics were there.  Fastball was 80 MPH this day with a 62-64 MPH 11/5 curve and a 68-69 MPH change. 

Trey Wagner, Rocky Mountain High School, 2017
A 5-foot-7, 170-pound right hand hitting OF who ran a 7.30 60. At the plate he is balanced with a slow load to the backside on the pitch.  He shows strong weight transfer on the swing and hits off a firm front side.  Swing path is slightly uphill with hands finishing high on the swing.  He showed good power to the gaps and registered an 84 MPH exit velocity off the tee.  Aggressive in the field with good glove action on ground balls.  He has a quick release from an over the top arm angle.  He showed good accuracy on his throws and showcased a 75 MPH arm.
