April baseball is upon us and teams are gearing up for a wild 5 weeks to make the playoffs. Here is a look at yesterdays action.
Cherokee Trail (1-2) 10 Cherry Creek (5-2) 0
Behind the outstanding pitching of Conner Nantkes (2017) the Cougars beat the Bruins Thursday at Cherokee Trail. Conner went 5 innings only allowing 3 hits with 1 walk and striking out 2 Bruins. Offensively the Cougars were led by Michael Morris (2017) who went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI’s, and Ryan Sullivan (2016) Ryan went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI’s as well. The Bruins and Cougars split their 2 game league series.
Grandview (4-2) 14 Overland (0-5) 2
The Wolves completed the league 2 game series with the Blazers on Thursday. The Blazers made a game of it only trailing by a score of 4 to 2 after 5, but then in the 6th Tyler Smith (2016) hit a grand slam, and the Wolves went on to score 6 in the 6th and added another 4 in the 7th.
Mullen (4-3) 6 Arapahoe (1-4) 5
The Mustangs completed the 2 game series by sweeping the Warriors on Thursday. Mullen’s Rocco Porreco (2017), Maverick Handley (2016), and Jonathon Miranda (2016) they combined with 2 RBI’s each for the Mustangs 6 runs. Arapahoe’s Jacob Goodman (2016) was 4 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and Clay Hanson (2016) went 3 for 4.
Smoky Hill (5-1) 9 Eaglecrest (2-3) 1
Smoky Hill pitcher Paddy Walsh (2017) got the win going 4.2 innings allowing just 2 hits and striking out 3 Raptors. Offensively Smoky was led by Matt McDermott (2016) going 3 for 4 with a jack, and bringing in 4 RBI’s. Smoky Hill and Eaglecrest split their two game league series.
Thunderridge (6-1) 15 Columbine (4-5) 5
The Grizzlies beat the Rebels in this non-league game on Thursday. The Rebel’s Chase Anderson (2017) went 2 for 3 with a home run and 2 RBI’s.
Rocky Canyon (4-5) 2 Broomfield (1-3-1) 1
In this low scoring game both pitchers did an outstanding job. Rock Canyon’s Matt Givin (2017) threw all 7 innings giving up 6 hits, 1 run, with 8 K’s and Broomfield’s pitcher Walter Pennington (2016) threw 7 innings giving up 8 hits, 2 runs, with 7 K’s.
Lewis Palmer (7-2) 14 Sand Creek (1-5) 4
Lewis Palmer scored 14 runs and were led by Jared Pope (2017) who went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s, Paul Tillotson (2016) who was 2 for 3, scoring 2 runs and adding 2 RBI’s and Billy Cook (2017) who was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI’s. Sand Creek could only come up with 4 hits in the ballgame.
Mountain View (5-0) 3 Niwot (3-5) 0
Mountain scored three runs all in the bottom of the 6th to take the win. Mountain View’s Holden Bernhardt (2016) pitched all 7 innings and struck out 10 batters. While Niwot’s Tyler Meek (2016) pitched 5.1 innings allowing only 3 runs and had 6 strikeouts.
Windsor 2 Pueblo East 0
The Wizzards get a big day on the mound from Jake Greenwalt (2016) went 6.2 innings giving up 4 hits and collecting 9 K’s.
