The player featured today is one of the top players in the state of California and figures prominently in our Class of 2026 Rankings. All players featured within our Uncommitted Spotlight series are ones that college coaches and fans should be keeping their eyes on over the coming months.
We invite you to get to know them through the eyes of our Prep Baseball California staff of scouts both through our in person looks at players and/or the data-backed numbers collected at our events with our partnered companies. TrackMan, Blast Motion, and Swift Performance provide comparable data to project and evaluate players. All of these systems come together to give a clear picture at what colleges will get when a players steps onto their campus.
Today, we put the spotlight on the number 137 ranked player in the 2026 class in SoCal '26 C Luke Severns from Etiwanda High School. Severns has impressed the Prep Baseball California staff over the course of a variety of events during the 2024 calendar year with other impressive live looks on the travel/showcase circuit during the year. An attendee at the SoCal Preseason All State Underclass to open the year where he was noted as one of the top uncommitted catchers in attendance across the 3 Preseason All State events from there he carried it into a solid Soph. season on the lower levels at Etiwanda then into a standout summer. Our staff got eyes on Severns twice with a look at the JG Scout Day in July and then again at our CA State Games in August along where he put up impressive performances at both the plate and behind it.
Severns presents a wiry athletic build at 5'11 170 lbs. at present showing room to continue adding strength as he matures. A solid athlete for the catching position we have seen Luke run his 60 yard dash at 7.38 seconds with a top speed of 18.7 MPH. His work behind the plate as a receiver/blocker is presently very strong with feel for pitch presentation, sound blocking actions and mobility/agility in his lower 1/2 to profile to stick behind the plate long term. At present his arm shows well with 74 MPH C velocity and 2.08 range pop times, but as he continues to mature and add strength to his frame with polish to overall throwing process should see continued improvement.
Where Severns adds to his package of tools profiling him to play baseball at the next level is with his offensive profile. With a sound athletic LH swing that shows present leverage in the path with raw power in the operation at the plate. His Blast Motion metrics are presently very solid including an average of 64.7 MPH of bat speed with a max of 67.2 MPH. His hands are quick with 20 MPH average hand speed with a peak of 21.1 MPH showing good torque in his turn with 17.7 Gs of rotational acceleration. He produced some impressive batted ball data during batting practice including raw power with a 99 MPH max EV while showing feel for getting the baseball in the air with 60% or better Line Drive/Fly Ball combined rates at each event. His present profile suits a gap to gap doubles type approach with high contact/hard contact consistency.
Severns is now poised to compete for a spot behind the dish with Etiwanda's varsity program entering his JR. year coming off the very strong showing he had throughout the 2024 calendar year. As a LH hitter with upside who profiles to be a solid defender at a premium spot Severns is a name to be keeping eyes on out of the Inland Empire in the '26 class.
