Ryan Ozella
N. California Area Scout

STOCKTON, CA - We conclude position analysis with our series THE FIVE, taking a look at five standout middle infielders from the Northern California Preseason event. These infielders weren't the only standouts, but the staff collaborated and they made the strongest impressions. Earlier we posted a Quick Hits story with multiple early standouts from the day. We also previously released our stats leaderspitcherscatchersoutfieldersmiddle infielders, and corner infielders.

Today we look to dig a little deeper into these five middle infielders who we feel have a chance to be standouts at the college level. Players are listed in no particular order.

Scouting Report

QUICK TAKE

One of the Top 2021 players, Crawford showed he's got the skills to stick in the middle of the diamond and hit atop a lineup at the next level. Competitive spirit and showed a tenacity for being around the baseball all day and athletic skills to still make some jumps.

SCOUTING REPORT

1/27/19 - PBR N CA Preseason All-State - Cal Commit. Lean, long, large frame with width in shoulders; projectable frame that has space to fill in. Controlled and athletic runner keeping chest over feet (7.33 60-yd). Slightly opened stance with narrow knees turned in keeping even hands and high back elbow; controlled rock into back hip with hands going down then back. Barrel is short and quick with acceleration into the zone; very projectable swing attacking on level path with gap power regularly driving balls deep to pullside (90 exit velo). Very smooth and controlled in the infield with strong first step giving him large range of coverage; ability to speed up/slow down the body showing soft hands. Compact and quick arm that shows great accuracy with extra carry and life staying on a line going across the diamond (85 MPH). Cal commit is one of the top 2021 shortstops in NorCal with plenty of projection in his defensive skills and ability to hit at the next level.
