Scouting Report
NorCal Preseason All-State: The Nevada commit came out looking much stronger from the off-season and the athleticism and power are starting to help the profile take off. After running a very strong 7.07 60 yd to start the day, Wallace went on to show that the added strength translated to the field where he created easy leverage on the baseball with his hands being twitchy and explosive driving the quick barrel upwards through the ball as he regularly worked the pull side gap showing over-the-fence power (92 EV). From behind the plate the added strength translated as well as he was one of the top velocity throwing catchers (78 MPH) regularly keeping the ball on the glove side of the bag with accurate and firm throws (2.0-2.08 Pop). During bullpens he worked with some of the best arms on the day showing an easy target and handling high velocity well with a firm wrist showing quiet glove movements. Up next, Wallace will be representing California at the Prep Baseball Report Super 60 where he could repeat a similar performance and put himself on the MLB Draft radar.
vs Whitney - Nevada commit; lean lithe body type still quite a ways from physical maturity, flashed much of what we've seen before in regard to athleticism behind plate which was displayed in agility to block spiked balls in dirt, good mannerisms in communication with pitchers, pop throws were accurate 2.08 was best time between innings, there is some length on the backside of the arm action which is putting on a few extra hundredths, overall has solid receiving skills though does tend to sit a bit high which affects his relaxation and adjustability to less than great pitches, didn't have best day receiving as he mishandled a couple pitches, offensively was a bit off with timing and with approach taking him away from staying through the middle vs what was velocity below the hitting speed. Good player just didn't have his best day.
10/27-10/29/18 at a fall tournament - Nevada commit. Lean streamlined frame showing high, tight waist and strong legs; projectable frame that can add to it without taking away from the profile. Wide, balanced stance with high hands and a high back elbow while keeping flat bat above back shoulder; loads into back hip with quick leg lift/knee tuck before gaining ground while hands turn barrel to get on plane. Compact stroke with hands staying tight to the body and showing very quick turns and strong bat speed; in game doubled deep into left-centerfield with ball jumping off the bat before barreling a ball through the 6-hole in next at-bat. Shows quiet target with wider base and quick to knees for blocking skills; very strong arm regularly puts balls on bag with life (2.01-2.09). Arm has times where it gets longer on transition, but showed ability to have snap throws on base, especially when back picking. Very athletic body shows up on bases and when recovering blocks. Loved his vocal leadership and energy when playing the game.
Northern CA Underclass Games - Nevada commit, 6-foot-1, 160-pounds, strong and lean body type, well-proportioned, favorable physical projectability. One of Northern California’s top 2020 uncommitted catching prospects. Metrics, workout evaluations and game performance all added up. Offensively he’s got a chance to contribute as a catcher who can hit. Batting practice round showed off gap to gap approach, good balance, fast hands and intent to damage the ball. High intensity swings and high intensity in the box, with good finish through the ball. Quiet barrel on the way to the ball leads to good barrel control to and through the zone. Game at-bats wielded a pair of hard hit ground balls, one in the middle and one to the right side, ran both of them out. Aggressive again was the term that came to mind. Defensively he showed a good arm and real quick feet and transfer skills. Pop times were low and throws were on the bag. Good mechanics and quick release, gains good ground during his release. Block skills and athleticism behind the plate were definitely on display. Ability to pounce on balls in dirt and recover is quite good. Does tend to sit high at times when perhaps catching and receiving would be more appropriate. All in all, a talented all-around catcher, with defensive and offensive tools along with good intangibles.
8/18/18 - SoCal Underclass Games - Six-foot, 165-pounds, large, lean frame with wiry strength proportionally distributed throughout. Could easily see the addition of mass and strength to this frame. Broad shoulders with strength down through wrists. Cain generates above average pop from a medium-wide base and toe-tap trigger. Shows fast hands through the zone where he generates power from a full hip rotation. Shows a consistent middle approach with the occasional pull-side power. Finishes balanced and extended. Defensively he shows some agility in and out of his crouch. Arm is loose but can get long in the back causing some accuracy issues. Arm strength is presently average from a high ¾ slot. Accuracy was inconsistent during the defensive workout portion of the day before showing much better in-game.
6/1/18-6/3/18 at BAWS 2018 - Uncommitted. Lean lithe body type on 6-foot-1 155-pound frame. A standout in the 2020 class in Northern California. Tall, narrow stance keeping flat bat path through the zone; above average hand speed with tight turn and ability to leverage ball into outfield. Stayed to middle of field during games. Above average arm showing quickness in transfer out of glove (2.03-2.16 Pop); can continue to work on glove hand while behind the plate. Fluid runner with average speed out of box; 4.56 H-1st
