South Bay Week in Review: 4/1 - 4/7/19

Russ Morgan
SoCal Area Scout

SoCal, CAMy coverage the last week of six games took me from the South Bay to Orange County and back to the South Bay for a busy week of tournament and league action.

On Monday, I watched Drew Dalquist take on IMG Academy and he did not disappoint, putting together a very strong performance in front of a large group of MLB scouts. Tuesday, I visited Banning HS to watch the home team take on San Pedro.  The most intriguing player in this matchup was Banning’s Anthony Joya (2021). Wednesday, I returned to the OC for Redondo vs. West Ranch HS. A couple hitters (described below) stood out for Redondo against a tough West Ranch team that went on to win that game and the championship of the National Classic the next night.  Friday, I was again in the South Bay for North Torrance vs. West Torrance and then finished off my week seeing two games on Saturday at St. John Bosco - Mira Costa vs. St. John Bosco and LA Canada vs. South Torrance. The standout player on Saturday was Christian Bodlovich of Costa who stole the show throwing a complete game four hitter.

After six games with roster chalk full of players, there's bound to be plenty of notes, so here you go. Have at it. Enjoy the fun, chaotic madness that is covering teams in the South Bay.

TOP PERFORMERS

Redondo Union HS

2019, RHP (University of Arizona) Drew Dalquist was the main attraction last week.  Redondo traveled to Orange County to take part in the National Classic High School Baseball tournament. On the opening night, Dalquist faced the highly talented IMG, who boast many D1 commits on the team.  Dalquist didn’t disappoint in front of at least a few dozen scouts. He went 6 1/3 innings, giving up six hits, surrendering three runs, walking two, and striking out eight Ascender hitters. His stuff was working. His fastball was consistent 91-93 and topping at 95 MPH, curveball 76-78 mph, and changeup was 83 MPH. The fastball was working in all ways possible; he threw 18 first pitch strikes, making sure to get out in front and dominant the at-bat. His curveball is a true punch-out pitch inducing swing and misses. He rarely throws his change-up but when he does it is effective. It will be fun to see him develop this pitch more. Dalquist is firmly on MLB Scouts radars as evidenced by the over 45 scouts at his last start.

Banning HS

2021, LHP/OF (Uncommitted) Anthony Joya has a large frame that is big and athletic. The arm action Is easy out of the windup and stretch, using natural strength to generate power. Joya gets extension on delivery throwing from an over-the-top arm angle with a live fastball that has easy velocity and extension while flashing arm side action...
