Irvine, CA - The Prep Baseball Report - California ID event provided a platform for SoCal players to showcase their skills after a summer of training. Despite the restrictions throughout the state the showing was a successful one. From batting practice home runs to curve balls for strikes, many of the players have not missed a beat. There is always work to do on the baseball field and the players showed that they are continuing to work hard.
Baseball technology in the form of Trackman and Blast Motion continues to be a wonderful tool to evaluate players. Blast Motion provides three scores in the form of Plane, Connection and Rotation on a 20-80 scale. This helps paint a clear picture of what Blast Motion is tracking and what the player excels and does not excel at. With this score players are provided explanation and tips for improvement. As always, pen to paper scouting notes and eye tests from the scouting staff are hard at work. The combination of technology and in person scouting continue to strengthen reporting.
SCOUTING REPORTS
Max Murray, Coronado (CA), 2024
Positional Profile: RHP/OF
Body: 5-11, 155-pounds. Lean athletic frame with room to fill out.
Delivery: Balanced repeatable delivery. Uses a side step that comes up to a medium knee tuck. Shorter stride length but delays upper body to get good separation. Is online with home and violently firms up the front leg at landing.
Arm Action: Compact arm circle in the back that comes out of the H 3/4 slot. Plus arm speed that accelerates late in the action. Drops slot slightly on CB. Consistent arm speed on all pitch types.
FB: T82, 79-81 mph. Located it well down in the zone
CB: 62-64 mph. Gets good extension on it and really snaps it off. Present HB movement so moves more like a slurve.
CH: 69-71 mph. Had trouble locating it. Located mostly down in the zone as it had late downward life.
Cameron Teper, Santiago (CA), 2023
Positional Profile: LHP/1B
Body: 6-0, 170-pounds. Long and lean build with present athleticism
Delivery: Tall and fall type of delivery. Uses a mild knee lift that is straight up and down. Dips slightly into his back leg but really drives forward quickly gaining good momentum. Finishes firm with his lower half allowing for good energy transfer up the chain. Is online with home at finish.
Arm Action: Quick and loose arm action out of the H 3/4 slot. Accelerates arm late in the action but keeps in the same on all pitch types. Good extension out in front. Deceptive at times as he hides ball behind his body. Slots all pitches the same.
FB: T79, 77-78 mph. Located it well to all quadrants
CB: 64-66 mph. Decent spin at around 2100rpm. Some present HB movement so moves more like a slurve
CH: 67-68 mph. Commanded the pitch and showed good late fading action.
Trent Christianson, Poly (CA), 2024
Positional Profile: RHP/3B
Body: 6-0, 180-pounds. Well proportioned pitcher's frame that is filling out
Delivery: Simple and repeatable mechanics. Uses a medium knee lift and rides down the mound while staying connected to his backside. Gets decent hip-shoulder separation. Lands online with home and in a good fielding position
Arm Action: Clean compact arm action that comes out of the 3/4 slot. Arm accelerates late in the delivery. Consistent on all pitch types. Gets best extension on CH.
FB: T78, 76-78 mph. Decent VB average at 21 inches. Located it well to both sides of the plate.
SL: 61-62 mph. True slider having very minimal VB averaging 0.7 inches.
CH: 68-70 mph. Straight change that dies late in its action
Catchers
Bryce Humphry, Santa Margarita Catholic (CA), 2023
Positional Profile: C/1B
Body: 6-1, 180-pounds. Athletic projectable frame with size and present strength.
Hit: RHH. Slightly closed and athletic in stance. Loads into his back hip and starts coiling before using a simple forward stride. Balanced compact stroke that works on a flatter bat path. Good feel for the barrel and stays extended through at finish. Pounded the LC gap with line drives and deep flyballs. Only 1 GB his whole round.
Power: 98 mph exit velocity. Current pull side power. Blast metrics give a good power ceiling as he averaged 72 mph bat speed and 21gs of rotational acceleration.
Arm: RH. C - 73 mph. Quick short-arm the comes out of a higher slot. Leaks front side a little and doesn't get too extended which causes some tail on his throws. Mostly accurate on throwdowns
Defense: 1.99-2.10 pop times. Sets up in a wider in taller crouch. Quick feet and clean exchanges on throwdowns. Soft glove when receiving.
Run: 7.52 runner in the 60.
Mark Manuel, Covina (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: C
Body: 5-10, 185-pounds. A medium frame that is well proportioned.
Hit: RHH. Sets up in a wider base with an upright body and loose/low hanging hands. Doesn't utilize a stride, just turns front foot open to clear hips. Hands and bat work up in his load. Swing path is steep but has good bat to ball skills and found the barrel more often than not. Middle of the field approach.
Power: 87 mph exit velocity. Bat speed average of 70mph and rotational acceleration average of 17gs show a decent power ceiling. Better utilization of the lower half would produce more power.
Arm: RH. C - 74 mph. Quick and snappy arm action on throwdowns. Some present tail on throws resulting from lack of extension. 5/6 accurate throws on throwdowns.
Defense: 2.01-2.19 pop times. Sets up in a wide but deep crouch. Clean and quick footwork on throwdowns. Decent blocking on balls in front but trouble moving to his right.
Run: 8.21 runner in the 60.
Kai Nagashima, Peninsula (CA), 2025
Positional Profile: SS/C
Body: 5-10, 150-pounds. Lean athletic build with room to fill out.
Hit: Switch. Similar set up from both sides. Open stance with a slight lean into his backside. Starts load early and stays connected to his backside. Swings are similar from both sides. Both smooth strokes that work on a flatter path with maybe a little more lift from the right side. Worked the whole field and showed a nice ability to stay inside the baseball.
Power: 84 mph exit velocity. Not much power currently but clean mechanics and with plenty of room to fill out show power will come.
Arm: RH. C - 69 mph. INF - 74 mph. At C, the arm action was quick and snappy. Throwdowns were mostly one-hops to the bag. Quick to release. At SS arm action was quick and fluid, in rhythm with feet. 5/6 accurate throws.
Defense: 2.14-2.33 pop times. At C, showed quick feet and clean exchanges. At SS showed good feet and range. Took good angles, softer hands, and clean transitions.
Run: 7.67 runner in the 60.
Sully Spivey, Irvine High (CA), 2024
Positional Profile: SS/C
Body: 5-6, 113-pounds. Smaller lean frame with plenty of room to fill out
Hit: RHH. Straight up with feet in stance with loose hands. Utilized a toe tap trigger along with a higher elbow hand pullback. Steeper stroke with a late point of contact. Most contact was with hands getting inside the baseball to find the barrel. Very handsy swing with minimal lower body work.
Power: 70 mph exit velocity. Power will come with strength and weight gains.
Arm: RH. C - 63 mph. INF - 65 mph. At SS showed a longer arm action that is slower to release. Same release on all throws. Made accurate throws. At C that arm action is also a little long and slow to release. Was 4/5 on accurate throws on throwdowns.
Defense: 2.31-2.4 pop times. At SS, showed choppy feet but decent actions to the forehand side. Gloves it with two hands. At C, showed clean footwork but feet and exchanges were slow.
Run: 8.44 runner in the 60.
