FULLERTON, CA. - Pre-ProCase notes indicated Cade Liefer as a super-utility type at the collegiate level and his showing proved that. One of the few players that showcased himself both in the infield, outfield and as a switch-hitter. Liefer hustled throughout the showcase and made it known that he has the grinder mentality needed to succeed at the next level. Solid infield actions highlighted his ProCase as he showed off his fundamentals and consistency.
Super-utility players are becoming increasingly more desirable as the game evolves with many players from high school to the major leagues finding roster spots because of their versatility. Liefer is making that known early in his career with his willingness to play anywhere in the infield and outfield. Liefer’s build, actions and quick infield actions make me think that he should give catching a try as well.
The 2020 ProCase put Liefer up against some of the best Southern California has to offer and gives this uncommitted super-utility player a chance to boost his resume and spark interest from college recruiters.
THE REPORT:
Body: 5-foot-10, 165-pounds. Strong build with low center of gravity. Some athleticism with room for more. Baseball grinder build, actions and look.
Hit: Switch-hitter showing similar set-up and approach from both sides of the plate. Shows line drive approach with intent to pull from both sides. Possesses good bat-to-ball ability thanks to quick hands and good pre-pitch decision making. Quality at-bat type with a plan and clear intent at the plate.
Power: Averaged 4.87° launch angle and 76.14 mph exit speed. Personal best at 90.91 mph exit speed with 7.68° launch angle. Hard on the ground ProCase showing with potential to turn that into quality line drives down the line.
Field: Super utility player who showcased himself in the infield and outfield. Did not catch but shows actions and ability to do so. Fundamentals on display with a quality prep step before every pitch. Stays low to ground, using his natural low center of gravity to keep the ball in front of him. Quick turn and release with his throws. Read the ball well in the outfield and set his body up nicely. Puts his glove in position but needs to improve overall to make the next step.
Arm: Infield arm velocity of 78 mph, 7th overall. Quick release and above-average when turning two. Lacks arm strength at the next level to stick on the left side, profiles well at second. Outfield arm velocity of 83 mph, 4th overall. Consistent throws with a long hop or no-hop approach. Arm profiles in left-field at the next level.
