San Juan Capistrano, CALIF. - Moving along with our continued coverage of the 2021 SoCal Procase, our next athlete spotlight focuses on uncommitted OF Cooper Whitton. Whitton, who plays both basketball and baseball for Santa Fe Christian HS, is a premier athlete in California’s 2022 class and showcased an array of tools that really impressed during the events on field workout.
While the frame might be the first thing that stands out about Cooper, the sounds coming off his bat will surely be the lasting imprint. Over the last 9+ months, we have seen his Exit Velo at our events skyrocket from 95 to 103 MPH, with continued growth in every showing. Pair this with a 6.6 60 yard dash time and we are talking some extremely impressive force production and energy transfer skills. While the spring production may need to tick up little to garner attention from MLB decision makers, the SoCal Procase confirmed one thing about Whitton to scouts and college coaches alike: the tools are loud.
The Report
Body: 6-foot 3, 205 pounds. Mature build with present physicality. Solid base with room to add healthy mass in all areas. Stands out amongst players of the same age.
Hit: Neutral set up to start with medium high hands. Small, quick leg kick to initiate the swing with a slight hand hitch before beginning rotation. Barrel turn is tight to start and gets longer as rotation continues. Head stays quiet throughout the swing and gets into the lower half well, hands can get laggy at times. Intent behind each swing.
Power: Peak Exit velo of 103 MPH via Trackman in batting practice rounds. Power is currently present when he finds the barrel with potential to all fields.
Field: Showed well in the outfield during his defensive workout. Attacked the ball with conviction and had smooth transfers. Footwork was clean and showed some rhythm to it. With continued development, projects as a CF at the next level due to speed + athleticism.
Arm: Topped at 84 MPH during his defensive workout. Semi long arm stroke that gets up on time and produces some carry to his ball. Plays at all OF positions.
Run: Ran a laser timed 6.6 60 yard dash. Long, explosive strides that gain ground quickly.
Summary: If you are a college coach or evaluator for an MLB scouting department, Cooper Whitton is a name you are going to want to keep an eye on as we get closer to the 2022 draft. With a combination of speed, size and body awareness not often seen amongst high school prospects, he could easily see himself as a helium type guy if he can put up the in-game numbers to back the tools he currently possesses. While he may be raw in some areas of his game, it is impossible not to get excited about the skill set this kid possesses and what that could potentially look like a few years down the road. It will be interesting to see where he ends up making an impact at the next level.
