San Diego Swing (3/18 - 3/23)

Along with the rest of Southern California, San Diego is rich in baseball talent and as a Prep Baseball Report scout it becomes imperative to seek out as much of that talent as you can, whether talent is “known” or “unknown.” This week the San Diego Swing notebook brings you reports and video on three intriguing shortstops that each presented a different skill set and are making their mark in the 2019 season. The notebook also features a left-handed pitcher that was up to 90 mph along with an “unknown” 2021 third baseman with power potential and strong recommendation.

The Sweetwater Invitational Championship between the Patrick Henry Patriots and Serra Conquistadors was the highlight game of the week, with the Conquistadors winning 2-0 in a closely fought game. With a crowd that was into every pitch, it was a great setting for a tournament championship between two schools with a bit of a rivalry. With only five hits total in the game, it was the pitching that propelled Serra to victory as senior Desmond Szalapski overwhelmed the Patriots with a 12/6 curveball finishing the day with 6.1 innings pitched allowing two hits while walking three and striking out six. Two costly errors, including what would have been an inning ending double play, cost the Patriots two runs and eventually the game.
