PDP League Standouts

Nathan Rode | Tad Slowik

After its cancellation in 2020, like so many other things, the PDP League returned this summer and was hosted at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, NC. Introduced in 2019, it originally had a three-week format, but was condensed to one week this year, more resembling its predecessor, the Tournament of Stars. Class of 2022 prospects gathered for a busy schedule of workouts, games and data gathering. With the 2021 MLB Draft complete, scouts were bearing down on the workouts and games to continue the march toward 2022.

Listed below are several players who stood out, some of whom are already well known, while others seemingly introduced themselves to the prospect world.

Brandon Barriera, LHP, American Heritage Plantation HS, FL (Vanderbilt)
Barriera has been in the spotlight since his freshman year and showed well at the Florida Preseason Classic against a loaded IMG Academy lineup. He tossed three innings across two appearances at the PDP League, striking out four and allowing just one hit, which was a jam shot that just cleared the infield and erased via pickoff. He gets good angle to his fastball, which was up to 96 mph, and puts hitters away with a plus slider that has sharp, late break at 80-83. The changeup has deception with good sink and he commands all three pitches to both sides of the plate.
