SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA. - The Road to the California State Games began at the second annual Orange County Preseason All-State held at JSerra High School. Players descended on St. Pierre Field to show their fall/winter progress in the leadup to the spring season just a few weeks away. The invitation only event drew over 200 requests which was narrowed down to the 80 participants selected.

Players were put through a customary pro-style workout that included a laser-time 60-yard sprint, a round of batting practice, a defensive workout that includes double-play turns for infielders, and concluded with bullpen sessions for pitchers. We purposely did not include games because we didn’t want to put pitchers who aren’t ready to face live hitters in that situation.

As we dive deeper into our notes and videos we will release more post-event content. Earlier we released our Quick Hits highlighting 20 early standouts, the Statistical Analysis and now we'll take a look at the pitchers from the event. Also, this evaluation list doesn't include players listed in our Quick Hits piece earlier which includes several other names.

PITCHERS:

Scouting Report

Orange County Preseason All-State - tall imposing long and lanky 6-foot-5 210 pound frame. Has the look and feel of a classic soft tossing three-pitch-mix left-handed pitcher. Consistent mechanics and an over-the-top release point led to consistent command of the zone. Took advantage of his frame by creating lower half extension helping play up his 73-74 mph fastball. Slow breaking 12/6 curveball at 58 mph showed loopy break and potential to cause timing issues for opposing hitters. Change-up at 62 mph showed some fade and an ideal speed differential from his fastball. Frame and extension show room for growth and the potential for this left-hander to make a jump.

Scouting Report

Orange County Preseason All-State - large mature and imposing 6-foot-4 215 pound frame. Arm worked off a whippy ¾ arm action with a consistent release point. Showed a straight 86-88 mph fastball with carry through the zone, topping at 90 mph on the last pitch of his bullpen. Curveball had some funky side-to-side spin to it at 73 mph that played off his fastball well. Change-up showed run and sink from the same release point as his fastball at 77-80 mph. Overall competitiveness and imposing fastball coupled with a funky curveball will make him difficult to face and should become an uncommitted name to watch.

Scouting Report

Orange County Preseason All-State - small build with plenty of room for growth that showed lots of potential in a 5-foot-7 125 pound frame. Mature overall feel for pitching who impressed with his four-pitch repertoire. Compact and clean mechanics allowed for repeatability and showed why he is able to control four pitches. Releases from an over-the-top release point with a straight fastball at 74-76 mph. Curveball featured a nice spin to it with a 12/6 break and commanded the pitch well. Palms a change-up at 68-69 mph with run and fade and releases the pitch with the same action as his fastball. Showed a cutter at 67-68 mph that acts like a slider but with little differential in his arm path. Young pitcher with lots of potential that will be a name to watch down the line.

Scouting Report

Orange County Preseason All-State - average compact build with room for growth in a 5-foot-11 140 pound frame. Showed the ability to hide the ball well throughout his bullpen by creating deception with a short arm path. Fastball was straight at 76-78 mph from an over-the-top release point and repeated well. Curveball broke well out of the hand with tight action at 62 mph. Change-up was his best pitch at 67-69 mph with heavy sink and run, creating swing and miss capability. Repeatable mechanics and deception give him a chance to miss some bats and with growth and velocity gains could become a successful pitcher.

Scouting Report

Orange County Preseason All-State - stocky build with some athleticism in a 5-foot-9 155 pound frame. Catcher and third basemen that jumped on the mound with a short arm path and release towards home plate. Fastball was straight at 74-77 mph and showed command to both sides of the plate. Flipped a slider over at 67-68 mph that he was able to command in the zone. Showed a splitter at 69-71 mph with downward spiking action. Overall showed that he can compete on the mound and throw strikes, making him an option on the mound for his high school team.

Scouting Report

Orange County Preseason All-State - sturdy lower half build in a 5-foot-10 165 pound frame. Mechanically showed a leg hitch and slight pause in the back creating some deception and timing issues for the opposing hitter from a high ¾ arm slot. Fastball came across with some run and carry at 79-81 mph. Curveball has nice spin and tilt to it at 65-67 mph and showed command of the pitch. Continued his off-speed command and control capability with a change-up with parachute fade at 69-73 mph. Both off-speed pitches showed swing in miss capability. Command and control pitcher with good feel for his off-speed pitches coupled with some deception in his delivery make him a viable arm on his pitching staff and an increase in fastball velocity would push his stock upwards.

Scouting Report

Orange County Preseason All-State - long and lanky left-hander with room for more in a 6-foot 165 pound frame. Steps and lands across his body creating deception and making it tough on left-handed hitters but also making it difficult to repeat and stay consistent within the zone. Worked quickly and stood upright throughout his delivery. Fastball featured some natural run at 69-72 mph. Curveball broke with prototypical 12/6 left-handed action and shows a left-on-left advantage at 54-55 mph. Change-up looked like his fastball at 63 mph with slightly more run and looks like a good weapon when facing right-handed hitters. Crossbody landing makes it difficult for him to stay consistent but is currently a viable option out of the bullpen to face left-handed hitters.

Scouting Report

Orange County Preseason All-State- ideal long and lanky pitchers frame with room for more at 6-foot-3 170 pounds. Quick mechanics with little wasted movement that helped play up his stuff and shows well for future improvement but needs to improve his finish as he tended to yank his frontside and fall off towards the first base side. Fastball featured little movement but carried well through the zone at 82-83 mph creating a heavy look to the pitch. Curveball showed good bite with swing and miss capability at 68-70 mph. Change-up stayed true to his fastball release point at 73 mph with arm-side-run. Ideal pitchers build stands out along with ability to command three pitches make this an arm to watch especially with a likely gain in velocity.

Scouting Report

Orange County Preseason All-State - average pitchers build with room for more at 6-foot 175 pounds. Showed repeatable mechanics and pounded the zone with low strikes throughout his showing. Five-pitch mix consisting of a four-seam fastball, two-seam fastball, curveball, cutter and change-up make him a kitchen sink left-handed starting pitcher. Showed natural movement on all of his pitches. Showed command of his four-seam and two-seam fastball at 77-81 mph to both sides of the plate. Curveball was located well with tilt at 64-66 mph and the cutter gets in on right-handers at 68-69 mph. Classic left-handed change-up with heavy run and fade at 70-71 mph. Quality left-handed varsity starter that had success in the San Diego Section Division 1 playoffs last season that is a velocity jump away from the next level.

Scouting Report

Orange County Preseason All-State - slim athletic pitchers build in a 6-foot-1 180 pound frame. Some funk to his overall mechanics with point and shoot upper body action. Fastball touched 85 mph with downward tilt and showed the ability to locate to both sides of the plate but lost velocity with a pause in the back. Curveball broke on an 11/5 plane with tilt and good spin but inconsistent release point led to command issues. Change-up showed a good speed differential at 67-71 mph with sink and fade. Mechanical issues need some tinkering but the body shows potential for growth and projection and could make this left-hander a viable pitching option.

Scouting Report

Orange County Preseason All-State - strong build with a sturdy lower half in a 6-foot-1 192 pound frame. Far East pitching mechanics featuring multiple pauses and a double leg kick create deception and timing issues for hitters. Showed stability, balance and a consistent landing spot in a very technical throwing motion. Fastball showed significant arm-side-run at 70-72 mph. Change-up stood out with its parachute fading action at 65-66 mph. Unique pitching mechanics give him a different look and the heavy movement on his pitches will create ground balls. Development of a breaking ball and a velocity gain will serve him well down the line.

Scouting Report

Orange County Preseason All-State - athletic build with room for more in a 6-foot-2 195 pound frame. Funky ¾ arm slot featuring quick arm action creates a 82-85 mph fastball with life. Showed a slider at 68-71 mph with late sweeping action but had trouble with keeping the pitch consistent in the zone. Change-up dove at 76-78 mph that shows well when not slowing the arm down in the front. Showed the tools to succeed as a successful power reliever with a funky arm slot and is a few mechanical adjustments away from making that next step.

Scouting Report

Orange County Preseason All-State - strong sturdy build in a 6-foot-1 200 pound frame. Uses his lower half well by keeping his weight back, creating drive with a big leg kick and exploding off his backside. Showed consistent clean mechanics throughout his showing and competed pitch-to-pitch. Showed the ability to locate his fastball to both sides of the plate at 82-83 mph. Featured a true splitter with tumbling downward action at 71 mph that has current swing and miss capability. Curveball broke on a 12/6 plane at 66-68 mph with snap and spin. Starter stuff with the lower half mechanics that project for a quality gain in velocity. Division 1 projection that could greatly benefit with the addition of a two-seam fastball and change-up.

Scouting Report

Orange County Preseason All-State - strong sturdy athletic build in a 6-foot-2 200 pound frame. The left-hander worked quickly and filled up the zone with a three-pitch-mix. Arches his back to create power and fires towards home plate. Located his fastball to both sides of the plate at 79-81 mph with carry through the zone. Curveball had a sharp break to it and some swing and miss action at 67 mph while consistently commanding the pitch. Change-up looked like his fastball out of the hand with run and sink at 68-70 mph while offering an ideal speed differential. Starter potential with a projectable frame that should see innings this season with a chance to raise his value with a gain in velocity.

Scouting Report

Orange County Preseason All-State - strong right-handed pitchers build in a 6-foot-1 205 pound frame. High ¾ arm slot with good lower half drive but failed to utilize his front side to his advantage. Fastball tailed with some tilt at 84-86 mph and shows the potential for more. Sharp curveball at 70-71 mph with good arm action and command of the pitch. Change-up ran at 78-80 mph but was too close velocity wise to his fastball. Strong athletic build shows potential and projection coupled with a mid-80s fastball gives him a nice platform to work off of.

Scouting Report

Orange County Preseason All-State - strong build with a sturdy lower half in a 6-foot-2 220 pound frame. Showed good presence on the mound and mature overall feel for pitching. Repeatable mechanics created a consistent high ¾ arm slot and arm action leading to command of the zone with consistent results. Fastball showed some downward plane at 85-86 mph and was able to locate the pitch to both sides of the plate. Curveball spun more like a slurve at 73 mph but lacked swing and miss action. Change-up featured consistent fade and sink at 74-78 mph and a looked like his fastball out of the hand. Command and feel for pitching give this sturdy pitcher starter potential and the ability to pitch deep into games.
