INF/OF Nick Yorke (Archbishop Mitty)
2020 INF/OF Nick Yorke, an Arizona commit, is listed at 6-0, 190 showing an athletic build with current strength built well on the compact frame. He showed as a twitchy athlete able to utilize his agility, loose hips and quick feet to excel at all parts of the game. Tooled up with plus bat-to-ball skills, above-average speed and solid average defensive actions to stick in the middle of the field.
Yorke showed off the hit tool during the event with three rounds of professional batting practice, driving the gaps and middle of the field showing easy carry from a compact and balanced swing. It's the type of swing made for lots of hard contact showing pop as well with the ability to create leverage to all parts of the field. Quiet set up with high hands and a high back elbow using a slight foot lift to get momentum into his back hip as he pulls the knob into his back shoulder finishing with a leg scissors. Swing allows his quick, loose wrists to work with strength through the zone having slight whip finishing high over his shoulders (92 EV). Carried over the strong BP rounds into the Scout Game picking up two hits including a clean single to CF before showing his knack for finding barrels battling a tough pitch into RF for a stand up double.
The defensive actions at SS were smooth and controlled with strong footwork able to control the body going any way as he moved through the baseball; have regularly seen him take strong angles to the baseball allowing his athleticism to have the range play up. The arm, coming back from a small pre-season procedure, worked from a mid-slot showing ability to keep the ball on the bag even as he is on the move; future average with quick release. Only worked at SS during the workouts (did play some OF in the live at-bats portion of the day), but during the Spring showed the ability to track and chase down balls in CF where he's got great first step quickness and the hips to open up and drop covering ground. The baseball makeup is top of the charts with a great understanding of the game and the type of personality you want from players on your team. Two strong seasons in one of the top leagues in Northern California (West Catholic League), Yorke has a bright future either at Arizona or in the MLB.
