N. California Preseason All-State: Outfielders Analysis

STOCKTON, CA - Today we take a look at the outfielders from the Northern California Preseason All-State event, held at San Joaquin Delta College on Sunday, January 27th. We will cover infielders in another feature and have already posted a Quick Hits on some standouts from the event. Additionally, Player statsPitchers, and Catchers are also available for review.

Scouting Report

1/27/19 - PBR N CA Preseason All-State - Santa Clara commit. Medium frame with high waist and length in legs and wide shoulders; starting to gain good strength and added weight as body is starting to fill in. Twitchy athlete with quick legs and ability to get moving quickly (6.91 60-yd). Wide, balanced stance with high hands and high back elbow; rocks into back hip with big knee tuck allowing hands to work directly back. Bat shows quick bat speed working on slightly upward path and driving through contact creating good extension; ability to drive balls gap-to-gap with deep gap power (91 exit velo). Controlled and easy swings with ball jumping off bat. Defensively moves well in outfield showing strong understanding of footwork for position; quick, compact arm with life on throws to both bags (82 MPH). Already a known and ranked player from 2020 class, Mugan continues to impress showing growth in his physical frame and with his baseball skills.

1/27/19 - PBR N CA Preseason All-State - Air Force commit. Medium frame that is long and lanky with lean strength throughout; very projectable frame. Easy runner putting head down and letting very fast feet take over (7.18 60-yd). Slightly crouched stance with wide base and flared elbows as hands stay even with back shoulder keeping flat bat; slight rock into back hip as hands pull back under control. Back elbow tucks allowing bat to get on plane and drive through the ball on level path; quickness in the bat with quick turns of the body showing middle focus and ability to backspin balls into the gaps (90 exit velo). Projectable future swing with flashes of more pop as he matures and strengthens. Quick, short steps allow him to come up on ball under control before allowing glove to get down and through the ball; loose, easy arm with longer swing before quick release putting the ball on a line to bases showing carry (85 mph). Long and lean athlete that oozes potential with projectable frame and big intangibles. Top 2021 who could rise up rankings through Spring

1/27/19 - PBR N CA Preseason All-State - Large frame with width in chest showing strength and current muscles; big, physical kid with strength throughout and uses long stride length to gain ground (7.75 60-yd). Tall stance with slight bend of the knees showing high back elbow and even hands at back shoulder; quick knee tuck with simple, controlled load of hands directly back. Bat creates easy leverage with quick turns of the body to drive through contact; ball drives deep into gaps with pullside focus (94 exit velo). Slow and gathered as he approaches the ball letting downwards stab occur before quickly getting to ¾ release with extension; possibly more velo in arm when utilizing lower half successfully (83 MPH)

1/27/19 - PBR N CA Preseason All-State - Medium frame with lean build and squared shoulders in young body that is projectable with more space to add once mature; quick, long stride staying inline and staying over feet when running (7.03 60-yd). Balanced stance with feet just outside shoulders and high back elbow keeping hands even; hands work straight back with slight foot lift. Projectable bat works on slight upward path as he shows quickness in his turns while focusing to the pull side; bat flashes ability to create loft and leverage when keeping hands inside the baseball. Drove balls deep to the pullside (83 exit velo). Controlled body in OF with smooth actions coming up on ball; arm has slight downward stab as front arm/glove get high with high release and life on throws (82 MPH).

1/27/19 - PBR N CA Preseason All-State - Wider shoulders on medium frame with lean lower half; feet are quick showing strong stride length and gaining ground quickly (7.15 60-yd). Tall stance with narrow base and high back elbow keeping hands in back shoulder; rocks into back foot pulling hands down with slight foot lift. Bat is direct and compact to the ball with pull side focus; flashed ability to go gap-to-gap and times where ball comes off the bat with more velocity when getting full body turns involved (85 exit velo). Good footwork with some backstep in his shuffle; arm is compact and quick with high back elbow. Ball has carry with ease in throws and ability to put more life into it (81 MPH). Projectable body and skills that could make some jumps.

1/27/19 - PBR N CA Preseason All-State - Medium frame with lean strength in proportion throughout body; legs get moving with average stride length showing strong straight away speed (7.12 60-yd). Tall stance with balanced base keeping high hands and high elbows; foot lifts quickly with transfer of weight into backside. Really looks to lift and drive balls as hands drop down and work on big upwards path; back shoulder gets under the ball creating loft into deep pull gap (81 exit velo). Works through the ball with glove out in front creating good transfer into throwing arms; compact arm swing into length before ¾ release. Arm had flashes of consistency with times where throws were high and offline (78 MPH).

1/27/19 - PBR N CA Preseason All-State - Long, medium frame with lean build showing growing strength and widening shoulders. Quick first step with good stride length (7.62 60-yd). Tall, balanced stance with low hands and elbow back; rocks into backside as hands pull back creating good stretch. Level swing that shows quickness and works best when getting most out of lower half; stayed in gaps with line drives and swing projects more as he continues to mature (75 exit velo). Young outfielder who attacks the ball well; can continue to improve his footwork and staying streamlined. Quick, whippy arm that shows well from mid-¾ slot; some run on ball due to arm slot but keeps it online to bases (77 MPH).

1/27/19 - PBR N CA Preseason All-State - Large frame with length in limbs showing strength in upper half, growing strength in lower half and wide shoulders; effort runner that gets his legs moving quickly with longer stride (7.21 60-yd). Narrow stance with slight bend in knees keeping hands even away from his body with elbows out; uses a big leg kick to start the swing with hands working back and down. Swing works on upwards path creating lift and driving through contact; bat has some length but was loud driving balls to the pullside (85 exit velo). Stays behind the baseball in outfield with short choppy steps; whippy mid slot arm from compact swing that flashed growing strength. Balls had some cut going to bag using it with his throws (78 MPH). Projectable frame and skills that could see leaps through year.

1/27/19 - PBR N CA Preseason All-State - Large frame with length in torso with strength in lower half; length projects some more size as he continues to grow. Full effort runner with shorter stride length (7.82 60-yd). Balanced stance with slight bend in knees keeping bat at back shoulder with high back elbow and flat bat; quick tuck as hands work back and up. Swing is level with ability to create leverage and shows flashes of late quickness through the zone; line drives to the gap projects more carry as he matures (87 exit velo). Controlled as he stays behind the baseball in outfield; average arm swing gets to high release showing ability to keep the ball online (76 MPH)

1/27/19 - PBR N CA Preseason All-State - Wide shoulders on full, large frame showing strength in body. Full effort runner with average stride length; chance to improve speed as he works more inline (7.52 60-yd). Balanced stance with crouch keeping hands at back shoulder and flared elbows; smooth load with simple foot lift as he rocks into back hip and hands moving back slightly. Level swing that is quick and compact; drove ball around the field showing strong bat control (84 exit velo). Very projectable swing due to ease and control. Quick and compact arm with strength currently and more coming (81 MPH); outfield skills will continue to improve as he plays out there more

1/27/19 - PBR N CA Preseason All-State - Long and lean build on medium frame; feet move well with average stride length (7.26 60-yd). Slightly opened, tall, narrow stance with high back elbow and wide hands at shoulder; knee tucks as hands work back with slight lift. Slightly upwards path with two hand finish high over shoulder; projectable swing hitting over stiff front leg that drives through contact into gaps and middle of the field (78 exit velo). Late glove with some high hips when fielding the ball; average arm swing with whippy finish. Limited usage of legs, but able to get ball out quickly (77 MPH). Space for growth in frame with raw skills that can be crafted over next years.
