Central Valley Preseason ID: Catcher Analysis

FRESNO, CA - Today we begin to take a look at some standout performers from the Central Valley Preseason ID Showcase that was held at Fresno City College on Sunday, January 13th. Earlier we posted a Quick Hits story with multiple early standouts. Player stats are also available for review.
Today we bring you the catchers analysis. NOTE: Players are listed in no particular order. Be sure to click on the player profile for full video from this event and more notes from other viewings.
Scouting Report
1/13/19 - Central Valley Preseason ID - Long, lean with length in legs and projectable medium frame; room to add strength as he matures. Quick feet with a shorter stride length that get moving once in motion (7.69 60 yd dash). RHH Narrow, slightly crouched stance with high back elbow and hands even with the back shoulder; hands work down and back with slight foot lift and tuck. Bat gets on plane early keeping hands tight to the body while showing projectable bat speed driving line drives to pull side. LHH shows similar stance with hands deeper into shoulder; can really get backside through the ball with similar bat speed (81 exit velo). Behind the plate showed a wide base with flashes of average footwork (2.07-2.12 pop); times where body can be high during pop. Very strong arm that flashed above average (75 mph) and put the ball in spots for SS to make tags. During pens, tracks the ball well and allows glove to be smooth with ability to stick pitches and get into a strong blocking position to keep the ball close in front of him.

1/13/19 - Central Valley Preseason ID - Large strong frame with length in legs, high waist, and sloping shoulders; very projectable body type that has current strength and room to continue to add to it. Utilizes long legs well with longer stride length. Balanced, open stance with slight crouch as hands start even with bat flat on the shoulder and high back elbow; hands pull back and down with the bat going to North/South as he utilizes big leg lift. Does a good job of staying in the back hip before getting hands into slot and driving through the ball. Quick, projectable bat speed that was very loud as he peppered gaps and middle of the field (90 exit velo). Behind the plate, showed quick transitions from the glove to throwing position, throws were on-line to the bag. Sits in crouch with a wide solid base and presents a nice low target; flashed solid blocking ability as well.

1/13/19 - Central Valley Preseason ID - High waist on a skinny, medium frame with higher waist; very projectable frame that can add weight while maintaining athleticism. High runner with quick feet and shorter stride length (7.30 60 yd dash). Slightly open, slightly crouched stance with even hands and high elbows; slow controlled load directly back before balanced drive through the ball. Consistently in a strong hitting position with loose wrists and strong bat to ball skills showing quick, compact stroke and driving ball to all parts of the field (89 exit velo). Smooth actions from behind the plate with a quick arm that gets rid of the ball quickly (73 mph, 1.92-2.14 pop); throws were online to bag with some arm side run. Strong blocking skills with ability to recover quickly and use athletic ability to move well around the plate. Compact and tight with a low base and quiet glove; sticks pitches while showing a strong target.

1/13/19 - Central Valley Preseason ID - Medium frame with thickness and physicality throughout; tight waist, wide rolled shoulders and barreled chest showing present muscles. Athletic runner with quick legs moving well once underway (7.35 60 yd dash). Wide base with even hands and relaxed elbows; short lean load before quick, compact, level bat. Drove ball to pull-side gap with flashes of pop keeping strong balance and transferring weight well (88 exit velo). Controlled footwork from behind the plate with the ability to quickly feed ball from glove to throwing hands while showing average arm strength (1.93-2.00, 75 mph) and quick release. Very strong wall behind the plate with the ability to smother pitches and keep the ball very close; utilizes a low quiet target with loose glove wrist and showing strong ability to frame pitches and pull the ball back into the zone.

1/13/19 - Central Valley Preseason ID - Medium frame with high waist and thickness in lower half; sloped shoulder showing strength in the upper half. Heavy runner with short steps; more agile than straightaway speed (8.04 60 yd dash). Balanced stance with even hands and high back elbow set up as hands work back with slight knee tuck. Quick bat has whip through the zone with ability to spray line drives gap-to-gap while having strong usage of lower half (86 exit velo). Quiet, relaxed catching stance with quick footwork and compact arm feeding ball back to center; times where he spins off front leg causing throws to be inaccurate (68 mph, 2.09-2.23 pop). Really shined with his receiving skills as he worked very hard to help out his pitchers and utilized strong blocking to keep all pitches in front of him.

1/13/19 - Central Valley Preseason ID - Medium frame with proportional size in legs/arms and frame that projects to add weight and strength as he matures. Ran a strong 60 yd dash with his athletic stride moving well once in motion (7.35). Tall, narrow stance with even hands that pull down and back with high front foot lift and knee tuck. Highly projectable swing works on a slight uphill path with the ability to get into slot and drive ball through the middle of the field; showed quick turns with flashes of above average bat speed. Strong secondary catching position with the ability to get the ball from glove to hand quickly while funneling to the middle of body; did a good job of handling some poor pitches and still putting the ball on the bag with compact and quick arm (2.0-2.04 pop, 72 mph). During the bullpens, his narrow stance showed well for pitchers with the ability to make subtle moves back into the zone and stick pitches when needing to. Blocking skills were also strong as he had the ability to athletically move as needed.

Scouting Report
1/13/19 - Central Valley Preseason ID - Large frame with higher waist and showing budding physical strength throughout. Long legs have the ability to get moving once underway with average stride length (8.03 60 yd dash). Tall, slightly open stance with high hands and a high back elbow; controlled short leg lift with quiet hands having short movement back before short, direct path to the baseball. Showed ability to drive the ball to pull side (89 exit velo) with flashes of more leverage creating pop. Defensively feeds ball well from glove hand to throwing hand with a high release and compact arm (71 mph); footwork flashes average when working in time and can put the ball on the bag (2.05-2.19 pop).
