CCS Focus (CA): Round 1 Update

Central Coast Section, CA - The rain had pushed back the start of the playoffs for some teams and that gave me a chance to catch another first round playoff game this time in Division 2 between No. 2 Aptos and No. 15 Half Moon Bay. The game was a true pitchers duel going 8 innings with both starters lasting for 7.2 innings. Aptos came out ahead with the 1-0 victory scoring in the bottom of the 8th on a bases loaded single by 2019 2B Alex Taylor.

Both team’s offense couldn’t figure out the opposing pitchers with 2019 RHP David Eichhorn (Aptos) and 2020 RHP Danny Guevara (Half Moon Bay) each being the key pieces for their teams overall success. Eichhorn went 7.2 IP giving up 4 hits and walking 2 while striking out 11. He was flat out dominant showing an above-average CB that he had excellent feel of and really used as he needed for the swing and miss. Between the 3rd and 5th innings, he had 7 of the 9 outs via strikeout.

Guevara matched Eichhorn each innings using three pitches including a CHG that was very good off the FB and a short overhand CB to change sequences. He also went 7.2 IP giving up 4 hits, 2 HBP and a walk taking a hard luck loss. He relied on weak contact and his defense to make plays only getting 3K’s on the day.

Both teams knew this game would come down to one run and things got testy when 2022 2B Jared Mettam was thrown out at the plate to end the top half of the 6th inning leading to both benches clearing and lots of loud noises with nothing really happening. Half Moon Bay lost the talented young player as Mettam was ejected from the game for going after the C after the play.

Before the 8th, Aptos only really had one chance to get some runs in the 6th when 2020 SS Luke Keaschall was hit with a pitch, almost leading to more fireworks after the recent play at the plate. Keaschall took 2nd on a passed ball and 3rd on a stolen base, but was stranded there which pushed this game into extras. In the bottom of the 8th, Aptos loaded the bases with 2 outs. Half Moon Bay pulled Guevara after the walk to load the bases and 2020 RHP David Fisher came on and got two strikes on Taylor before leaving a FB out over the plate that was hit into RCF to give the Mariners their 1-0 victory. Aptos will now play Monday 5/20/19 at home against Capuchino.

Players of Note:

2019 RHP David Eichhorn (Aptos) - Uncommitted. As mentioned, the large and lean framed righty was dominant in his outing consistently working 0-1 against hitters and then being able to knock them out with his above-average breaking ball. Eichhorn throws with tempo and rhythm on the mound and when his body is in sync with his compact arm, it’s absolutely electrifying stuff.
