CCS Focus (CA): 5/1/19

Central Coast Section, CA - Got to two CCS games last week with both games having playoff implications and both being competitive games with each team looking to get those much needed wins late in the season. Let’s look at games between Monterey at San Benito and Leigh at Leland. 13 players total with 7 Uncommitted.
GAME NOTES:
Monterey v San Benito (4/25/19) - The PCAL still has two weeks and this was one of the biggest games of the season. San Benito had a chance in the 3rd with runners at 2nd and 3rd but couldn’t find a big hit to get on the board. That would be the only inning the Haybalers really threatened as Monterey pitchers kept them off balanced getting lots of ground balls. The Toreadores loaded the bases in the 4th before a double-play scored their first run and then an error at 2nd base allowed the second run to score and take a 2-0 lead. Monterey added in the 7th with back to back hits before another costly error and single allowed two more unearned runs to cross and give Monterey the 4-0 win.
Leigh v Leland (4/27/19) - The Mount Hamilton League has had teams beating each other up all season and this game was a perfect example going 9 innings and having lead changes consistently throughout the game. Leland got on the board first with a HR in the 2nd by 2020 OF Carson Yates. Leigh responded with runs in the 3rd and 4th innings leaving runners in scoring position during both innings but taking a 2-1 lead. Leland took the 3-2 lead in the 5th when they scored 2 runs with 2 outs on 2 errors. Leigh brought out the extra-base bats in the 6th getting 3 2B’s and an error to score 3 runs and grab a 5-3 lead. Leland wasn’t backing down as they got 2 of their own and sent it into extra innings with a 5-5 tie. Leigh got 3 in the 8th when 2019 OF Robbie Hamchuk hit a HR and put the Longhorns up 8-5. Leland kept the game going as they responded tying the game with a 2-out 2-run single sending it to the 9th. Leigh loaded the bases and a Sac Fly ended up being the winning run and giving Leigh the 9-8 victory.
PLAYERS OF NOTE:
2019 RHP Jordan Yeager (San Benito) - Uncommitted. Closed out the game for San Benito showing a high waist and long medium build with lean lower half. Arm works cleanly with some depth out of the glove before a 3/4 release showing late life on the FB. FB 83-86 MPH with more possibly in there; pitch was straight and limited angle led to some hard contact in inning. Showed a short CB (65-66 MPH) that had flashes of good bend and some feel in it. Projectable frame and arm actions.
2020 LHP/OF Stevie Bull (Monterey) - Uncommitted. Lefty started in RF before hopping on the mound and going 3 IP giving up 3H, 0R, while striking out 2. Small frame with strength and mature build. Arm was compact with 3/4 release showing strong feel of both offspeed pitches. FB 77-80 MPH being able to locate to both sides of the plate. CB 64-66 MPH that he blended between a 1/7 and Slurve shape showing large depth. CHG 73-74 MPH had arm-side fade out of a FB look. Used all three pitches well mixing up sequences and changing eye levels of hitters.
2020 OF Lucas Mirizzi (Leland) - Uncommitted. Small frame that is wide and strong with quick actions in the middle of the diamond. Consistently good AB’s in leadoff spot finding hard contact throughout the day and constantly being in a good position defensively. Picked up a 1B in 1st AB with ball off the Pitcher and SS gloves before finishing the day with a 2B past the 1B to set up tying runs in the 8th inning. Agile over fast and instinctive with his runnings skills knowing when to turn it up/down (4.08B, 4.44 H-1st, 4.57T). Defensively shows a good 1st step in OF with understanding of opposing hitters tracking ball well off the bat. Showed off his accurate arm throwing out a runner at 1st who couldn’t get back on a hit-and-run and just missing a guy at the plate. The arm is fair but plays up because of that accuracy and carry on the ball.
2019 2B Michael Carnazzo (Monterey) - San Jose State Commit. Small, muscular frame that is mature showing athleticism. Leadoff hitter showed good AB’s with aggressive approach on pitches in the zone. Long fly out to CF before a lined shot at 1B. Picked up two hits in last two AB’s beating out a chopped INF 1B up the middle and then laying down a great drag bunt that not only got him on base but caused an error. Agile over fast with good range at 2B and showing an arm that fits well at the position with a high overhand slot.
2019 SS Trevor Johannes (Leland) - Chico State Commit. Physical build with strong and wide upper half that probably fits better at 3B over SS. Showed short swing picking up three hits including the ability to turn on a pitch for a 2B off the LF wall late in the game to put Leland in position to tie the game. Moves well with ability to go 1st-to-3rd and some lateral agility when on defense. Arm is fair playing from a lower slot where he flicks the ball across the diamond
IN-DEPTH COVERAGE:
2022 RHP Jackson Pace (San Benito) - Uncommitted. XL frame with length in limbs and wide shoulders; very projectable build with lean muscle building. Pitched beyond his years coming into a league matchup with the bases loaded and being calm and controlled on the hill. Quick, loose and easy arm from M-3/4 slot showing late arm speed and extension out in front...
