Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across California.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in their respective CIF Section Championship Game, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across California. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, eventually releasing our Preseason Power 25 rankings that’ll carry us into the opening week of action and the Third Annual Prep Baseball California Spring Invitational.

TEAM OUTLOOK

Simply put, the Dons are loaded with talent from top to bottom, headlined by 11 college commits and in 2024 they have their sights set high. Offensively, there is firepower all throughout the lineup. USC commit ‘24 Anthony Perritano brings back three home runs and 21 RBIs from last year and expect those numbers to increase in 2024. ‘24 Elijah Selga will bring “a ton of power to the plate” according to Coach Remiker and he returns 14 RBIs from 2023. Transfer from Francis Parker ‘26 Trey Gudoy Jr. adds even more to this already high octane offense that the Dons currently have. A pair of sophomore Stanford commits, ‘26 Alex Harrington and ‘26 Hunter Harrington are also expected to make some big contributions offensively for Cathedral Catholic.

As for two-ways, San Diego commit ‘24 Jack McWilliams is back after missing the entirety of 2023 due to injury and he will be a “major bat in the order” according to Coach Remiker while also seeing some time on the mound, too. UC Irvine signee ‘24 Michael Podstreleny will be the Dons’ starting catcher and also a big piece in their starting rotation as he returns a .284 batting average and a 2.20 ERA from last year. ‘24 Vincent Venverloh, a San Diego signee, will look to build off a successful junior year where he hit .275 and pitched to an ERA of 1.83, during his senior season.

Headlining the pitching staff for the Dons will be Indiana recruit ‘24 Trey Telfer, who earned Western League Pitcher of the Year honors in 2023 where he logged a 6-1 record and an ERA of 1.91. ‘25 Owen Smyth, a Cincinnati commit, will be another mainstay in Cathedral Catholic rotation and will provide a change of pace with his southpaw profile.

While this team is predominantly filled up with committed talent, there are still a handful of uncommitted prospects that Coach Remiker seemed particularly fond of. ‘24 Jayden Ysais and ‘24 Joseph Anderson are a pair of outfielders that are expected to contribute this season in big ways; same with ‘24 Noah Tenbrook.

Coach Gary Remiker’s Expectations: “I think we have one of the most talented rosters in San Diego. I think we should compete for the Open Division title.”
