2018 Cape Cod: Hyannis Prospect Reports
August 15, 2018
Cape Cod League batting champion Matthew Barefoot and ultra-athletic Will Holland highlight a deep list of prospects for the Harbor Hawks.
HITTERS
Matthew Barefoot, 2018, R/L, OF (Campbell)
Six-foot, 205 pounds with an athletic build and strong frame. Barefoot went out and slashed .379/.474/.521 across 140 at-bats during the regular season for Hyannis. His efforts earned him an All-Star nod, the “Pat Sorenti MVP” award and the “Thurman Munson Batting Champion” title. At the plate, he starts tall with a balanced and relaxed set-up. He sinks down and coils into his back hip as he gets ready to hit. Although it’s a lot of movement, the hands stay back and create a powerful stretch in his core. Once his stride foot is down, he’s in a strong, athletic position with his entire body. From there, the swing is loose and quick with a high level of adjustability. Advanced approach and pitch recognition. Rarely commits to a pitch too early. Shows enough bat speed to defend against velo when down in the count. Power plays better gap to gap presently. Flashed lift in swing to pull-side during BP. Best time down the line was 4.25. Defensively fits best in LF with a borderline average arm. Barefoot will see plenty of attention from evaluators in 2019 as he looks to have another big season for Campbell.
