Island Future Games Trials: Quick Hits

On Wednsday, May 22nd the Prep Baseball British Columbia hosted the Island Future Games Trials at the Victoria HarbourCats Players Club in Victoria, British Columbia. This gave players the opportunity to collect updated metrics via our tech partner TrackMan.

The event also serves as an identifier and qualifier for our Select Series Events such as Future Games (2026), Jr. Future Games (2028/2029), Senior Future Games (2025), and West Coast Games (2025/2026).

Travis Harfield OF / RHP / West Coast Adventist School (virtual), BC / 2025

As one of Canada’s most natural athletes, Harfield showcased raw power and explosiveness on both sides of the ball. The RHP/OF’s athleticism was immediately apparent when he led off the island event with a 93 mph throw from the OF. While pitching, he showed an over the top arm slot with a fastball that jumped out of his hand. With quick twitch, the uncommitted 2025 ranged from 88-90 mph on the mound. Offensively, Harfield possesses a rotationally dominant swing that produces immense torque. His EV averaged 91.4mph and topped out at 98 mph. In addition, Harfield is an immediate threat on the basepaths. His 6.53 60-yard dash is game changing speed. Look for the uncommitted 2025 to continue to do damage in the BCPBL for the Victoria Eagles.

Lukas Le Gras C / OF / Lambrick Park, BC / 2025

Le Gras continues to trend upwards with another strong showing at the Vancouver Island Future Games Trials. The uncommitted 2025 catcher has made it apparent that he is now a threat on both sides of the ball with 1.88 pop time complimented with EV’s upwards of 96 mph. Le Gras’ most impressive trait is his release behind the plate. In addition to his 0.44 - 0.53 release, his throws have carry, making him a serious threat to shutdown any run game on the base paths. The Victoria Eagles catcher is projected as one of the top catchers in Canada, making him a must follow throughout his last two seasons in the BCPBL.

Rhys Whiteford C / 2B / Cowichan Senior Secondary, BC / 2026

Whiteford is a dynamic left-handed hitting catcher in the 2026 class. A smooth swing with bat speed combined with present bat-to-ball allows him to drive the ball the other way with authority, working up to an 89 mph exit velocity. He receives well with quick transfer that translate to a 75 mph catcher velocity and a 2.01 POP time. He’ll be a name to follow in the 2026 class as he continues to add size and mature physically.

Deven Simonovic LHP / OF / Lambrick Park, BC / 2027

As one of the top arms in British Columbia’s 2027 class, it was no surprise to see Simonovic stand out at the Island Future Games Trials. At 6-foot-0, 160-pounds, he works down in the zone out of a clean slot. Pitchability is advanced for his age, with the ability to locate 4 pitches for strikes. The fastball sits 80-81 mph that pairs well with two unique breaking balls, highlighted by a curveball with over 14 inches of horizontal break. He mixes in a changeup as well that has plenty of arm side run. There's early feel to spin the baseball, which should improve as he adds strength and velocity. The repertoire translates in-game as well, showing well at Bantam Best of the West back in early May. Simonovic will be a strong follow on the Island for years to come.

Austin Blair OF / RHP / St Andrews Regional, BC / 2026

Blair has solidified himself as one of BC’s most intriguing two-way players. The 2026 OF/RHP has every tool necessary to play at the highest level. With a 6-foot-3, 180-pound athletic frame, he is an efficient route runner combined with a 91 mph arm from the OF and 6.93 60-yard dash. At the plate, he utilizes his long levers to maximize his swing path producing EV’s upwards of 94 mph. Following the Island event, Blair added a pair of homeruns this past weekend, continuing to showcase that he is one of the top hitters in BCJPBL. On the mound, the RHP has an over the top delivery that creates tilt and carry on his fastball at 85 mph. The Victoria Eagle is a definite threat in all aspects of the game and a must follow for years to come.

Flynn Shugar 2B / SS / Gulf Island, BC / 2025

Shugar had one of the better overall days at the Island Future Games Trials, impressing both in the box and on the dirt. An athletic player, he ran a 7.10 60-yard dash and moves well laterally on the infield with smooth footwork to put himself in an optimal throwing position. He showed arm utility while throwing, getting up to a 78 mph infield velocity. At the dish, Shugar showed present bat-to-ball with the ability to elevate back up the middle with his smooth left-handed swing. The uncommitted 2025 and Mid-Island Pirate will be someone to follow as the BCPBL season continues.
