Scout Day - Notes On Six Arms
March 2, 2018
The annual BC scout day that typically takes place in late February, early March has always given pro scouts and a few college teams an early look at the talent in the western parts of Canada. This day was no different as there were many prospects who have clearly been working hard over the winter making significant gains on the mound and on the field.
We highlight six arms here who stood out on the day with more notes and videos on position players to come.

British Columbia Insider: Scout Day - Notes On Six Arms
Declan Dutton RHP / Saint Georges, BC / 2018Rankings StateRank: 3 / POS: 3
Report: Dutton, 6-foot-4, 180-pound right-hander has filled out his body since last fall. He worked from near high-¾ slot and sat 86-88 with his fastball at the scout day with a clean, quick arm. His changeup was a plus pitch with good sinking movement at 75-77 mph and he flashed some good curveballs with bite and downward action, at times has a tendency to come around it but looks to be a solid pitch that has a chance to be a potential put away to hitters. |
Tate Dearing RHP / OF / Earl Marriott Secondary, BC / 2018Rankings StateRank: 2 / POS: 2
Report: Dearing, A 6-foot-2 190-pound right handed pitcher was the top performer at the event. Tate came out and opened some eyes, predominantly sitting 91 and hitting 92 mph a couple times with his fastball. It came out clean with some room to grow still and it’s not hard to envision him to continue to add velocity. His curveball was 70-72 mph with sharp bite but was over throwing it that day causing some control issues. His changeup was 81-83 MPH which he is still developing. Overall, the Polk State commit and 2nd ranked prospect in the 2018 class did himself a lot of good on the day, will be a follow for pro teams as we near the season. |
Jacob Davies RHP / 1B / NA, BC / 2019Report: Davies, a 6-foot-3 185-pounds right handed pitcher was a pleasant surprise at the workout. He had an electric arm that was loose with whip, running his fastball up to 89 mph and sat 87-88 for the majority of his pen. His curveball is developing but shows feel and could be a potential put away pitch as it improves and adds polish, worked on this day at 72-73 and will have the opportunity to throw it harder. Command was a little erratic at times but the life and quickness in Davies arm, along with the frame and him being an uncommitted 2019 makes him a very intriguing prospect heading into the 2018 season. |
David Rhodes RHP / Langley, BC / 2018Rankings StateRank: 1 / POS: 1
Report: Rhodes, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound right hander had the second best velocity on the day as his fastball worked at 88-90 mph with some effort involved. His change up was 77-79 MPH and his curveball was 75-78 and both pitches showed feel out the hand for the Washington commit. The top ranked prospect in BC 2018 class may not have had his best stuff on the day, but it’s easy to see why guys like Rhodes and he will get many looks this spring, leading up to June. |
Ryan Scott RHP / Langley, BC / 2019Report: Scott, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound righty from Saint John, New Brunswick was one of the surprising arms at the camp. His velocity jumped quite a lot since last fall as he was 81 mph at Tournament 12 and on this day, the fastball was 87-88 mph with clean actions, no stress points and quickness in the arm. He corrected his arm action over the winter and showed a plus curveball with good bite and 12/6 shape with the velocity of 73-76 mph. His changeup was 75-77 MPH with arm-side run and the uncommitted 19 has taken the next step in his game. College coaches will want to lock in. |
Theo Millas RHP / 3B / Alpha Secondary, BC / 2020Report: Millas, a 6-foot-3 right-handed pitcher was a top performer at the BC Scout day workout throwing an easy 87-89 which came out of his hand effortlessly. He showed a sharp 12-6 curveball that worked at 69-70 mph while he complimented that with a plus change up at 78-79 with arm-side movement. Millas is loose and easy with feel for his delivery, the National Team member looks to be on track as an early commit with the stuff he possesses. |
