Ontario Insider: Notes On Players Off To Jupiter
After another successful year north of the border, Prep Baseball Report Ontario is packing its bags and headed to Florida for the annual Jupiter tournament. This week, some of Canada’s top prospects will be performing for various club and scout teams to finish off the 2017 season. Those players will don uniforms for the DBacks Langley Blaze, Ontario Blue Jays, Toronto Blue Jays Scout Team, and the Rawlings National Scout Team. Over the next week, we will be posting daily on our Scout Blog. Be sure to follow us @PBR_Ontario for updates.
Some of the top players from the 2018 class will be Noah Naylor (Ontario Blue Jays), the top-ranked prospect in Ontario and 11th overall in the 18’ class. Mississippi State commit Eric Cerantola (Toronto Blue Jays Scout Team), and outfielder Denzel Clarke (Rawlings National Scout Team). These three prospects make up the top 3 in the 2018 rankings for Ontario, with Clarke being the only one uncommitted.
In the 2019 class, Oregon State commit Cesar Valero from Alberta will suit up for the DBacks Langley Blaze team while top prospect in Ontario, shortstop and recent Team Canada Junior National Team member Jaden Brown will be with the Ontario Blue Jays along with his counterpart on the left side of the infield TJ Schofield-Sam.
Below we highlight the teams that are represented by Canadians along with insight on some of the key prospects to look out for.
DBacks Langley Blaze
The DBacks Langley Blaze have the highest cross-country Canadian contingency at this year’s event, featuring players from British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario.
Top Prospect: Cesar Valero (Alberta)
Top Arm: Tate Dearing (British Columbia)
Top Defensive Player: Cesar Valero
Sleeper: Ryan Magdic
Player Notes:
Cesar Valero, SS, 2019
The Oregon State commit and Junior National Team member brings a degree of excitement to an already latin-heavy DBacks Langley Blaze squad. A native of Venezuela, the 6-foot-1, 183-pound Valero is one of Canada’s top prospects in the 2019 class. The shortstop shows an advanced hitting approach, and some thunder in his bat to compliment his ability to play a confident shortstop.
