British Columbia Insider: Initial Class Of 2018 Player Rankings (February)

As we begin our first official week being live from PBR British Columbia headquarters, we take a look at the senior class here in BC as our staff has put together a small, but strong 2018 rankings as we slowly inch closer and closer toward the 2018 season. With limited viewing so far this year, and being so early into the season, the rankings are guaranteed to change and expand as baseball activities pick up over the next few weeks.

We eagerly anticipate this coming Wednesday as we can get our “boots on the ground” scouting staff out to Inside Performance facility to get a look at nearly 75 of the top players in the province. This will give us a great opportunity to see many players for the first time in 2018, build our notebooks and scout blogs, as well capture video and tidbits on players across the province.

With that said, we are proud and to announce the first ever edition of the 2018 BC Rankings and give you a sneak peek into what the senior class holds.

Top Prospect

Leading off and coming in as the top prospect is University of Washington commit David Rhodes.

David Rhodes RHP / Langley, BC / 2018

Rhodes plays the majority of his ball across the border for the Seattle Selects, but recently has been in a Blaze uniform early into 2018 allowing us to get a good look at where Rhodes currently sits. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-hander has a live arm with a fastball that sits 88-90 and has been as high as 91 mph. The curveball shows depth and spin at 79-82 and utilizes a changeup that is a reliable pitch but can still add polish. Rhodes will get considerable draft attention and it will be interesting to see how the spring season plays out.

Three Junior National Team Arms

Following Rhodes is a string of right-handed arms with three Junior National Team members in Tate Dearing, Declan Dutton and recent Ontario native who now resides in BC Zach McQuaidDearing and Dutton are both committed to Polk State and the University of British Columbia respectively.

Tate Dearing RHP / OF / N/A, BC / 2018

Dearing was at the Area Code Games last year and works in the 88-90 mph range

Declan Dutton RHP / Saint Georges, BC / 2018

Dutton has clean actions and is more projectable with a long and lean frame of 6-foot-4, 185-pounds.

Zachery McQuaid RHP / OF / Maxwell Heights, BC / 2018

McQuaid is currently uncommitted and will look to get his legs underneath him as he will most likely be in live game action sooner than he would be if he was still in Ontario.

Top Position Prospect

The first position player to top the rankings is Abbotsford Cardinal catcher Kayden Beauregard

Kayden Beauregard C / Yale Secondary, BC / 2018

Beauregard is a 6-foot-1, 185-pound catch and throw guy with one of the best arms behind the plate in the country while showing bat speed and some power potential from the right side. A recent Iowa Western commit for the fall of 2019, Beauregard could draw some professional interest this spring and if nothing transforms, we will then slot him into the 2019 rankings as we get later in the summer of 2018.

Rounding Out Top 10

Two other teammates of Beauregard who crack the top ten are big 6-foot-6 right-hander and Northwest Florida State College commit Travis McDougall and third baseman Dylan Ohlsen. Two other teammates that crack the top ten are Langley Blaze members in outfielder Jayden Knight and Josh Marcheese. Rounding out the top ten is our first uncommitted player in Daniel Gernon.

Travis McDougall RHP / Yale Secondary, BC / 2018

McDougall is long and lean with the ability to create good downward angles and shown he can spin his curveball while showing signs of a multi-pitch threat. With room to add strength and size, the tank is not close to being full for McDougall and we expect him to have a big year in the BC Premier League.

Dylan Ohlsen 3B / Chilliwack Secondary, BC / 2018

Ohlsen, a Sacramento State commit who shows strength in the bat from the right side as he led the league in home runs with 8 and RBIs with 35. Ohlsen will once again be one of the most feared hitters in the league in 2018 as he begins our initial rankings as the 8th ranked prospect in British Columbia.

Jayden Knight OF / Yale Secondary, BC / 2018

Knight is a speedy and athletic outfielder who is committed to staying BC and attending the NAIA powerhouse University of British Columbia comes in at number 7. Offensive player who can make an impact at the next level and still have a lot of upside and polish his game.

Josh Marcheese 1B / St Thomas More Collegaite, BC / 2018

Marcheese is a physical and imposing left-handed bat with strength and bat speed at 6-foot-1, 230-pounds who is off to Niagara University in the fall of 2018 comes in at number 9. Offensive player who can make an impact at the next level and still have a lot of upside and polish to their game.

Daniel Gernon OF / Lord Tweedsmuir, BC / 2018

Our first uncommitted player in the top ten is Daniel Gernon. Gernon, an outfielder from the Cloverdale Nationals,  is a right-handed bat with gap to gap pop and speed is a big asset of his game as well. There is present strength at 5-10, 190-pounds and shows smooth actions. Can contribute on both sides of the ball. Look for Gernon to look to prove a point early on and shouldn’t be very long for a school to jump on him and make a significant offer.
