Uncommitted Spotlight: Ty Nelson

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

We continue our coverage of uncommitted players, spotlighting them to help maximize their exposure and assist them in the recruiting process. Today, we look at 2021 SS Ty Nelson (Saguaro).

2021 SS Ty Nelson (Saguaro)Last attended a PBR event back at the end of January before the high school season began where he stood out as a defensive middle infield prospect. Nelson plays in a large athletic frame at 5-foot-10 180-pounds with strong legs. He showed soft twitchy hands with a quick exchange and release. At the plate, he displayed a simple middle approach with a short level swing. Today, he shows similar defensive actions with athletic footwork. His arm has improved with his body that has gotten noticeably stronger over the summer. Offensively, he displays a similar approach that he had back in January at the plate with some added pop. He's the type of guy that works counts, looking to get on base. His speed wont wow you but he plays the game quicker than his running would show. The part of his game that we like the most that sometimes goes unnoticed in prospects is his high energy attitude with high baseball IQ.

5-foot-10 165-pound, lean compact build with strong legs & forearms. More athleticism than 7.65 60-yard dash would suggest, plays faster. Gamer type of mentality that plays the game with high energy. Hits from an athletic spread out base. Uses a quick leg lift to create leverage, landing hard on front foot. Hands get to a good launch position with level swing. Some extra movements throughout the process. Middle approach with above average contact at 83mph. Showed above average actions defensively with soft twitchy hands. Gets rid of the ball quickly with short arm action at 76mph. More arm strength there. High baseball IQ. Development should be followed.

High energy player from a Medium athletic frame with some strength. He was one of the better defensive SS's we saw this weekend. He has quick movements with easy actions. Footwork and glove are solid. Rounds the ball for added arm strength & carry towards 1B. Leadoff type hitter that looks to spray line drives over the M-INF. Underrated pop & player.
