Progress Report: Steven Vasquez

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

PBR has had the chance to dig through the players and numbers from the past year, we have had a chance to see some players make some significant jumps recently. Today, we will be taking a look at a "Progress Report" feature that highlights players that have shown significant improvement in their game; whether it's on the mechanical end, performance wise, physicality or in the measurable statistic department. The "Progress Report" can be a minor improvement in recent months or a substantial transformation over time. Today we will be taking a look at '21 LHP/1B Steven Vasquez (Odyssey Prep)

Steven Vasquez attended a PBR event back In February at our Preseason I.D. at Desert Ridge. His body & athleticism really stood out at 6-foot-4 200-pounds, with long limbs with strength in legs. Threw strikes down in the zone from a H3/4 arm slot with a quick arm. Straight FB sat 80-83mph with occasional late run. CV showed above average potential at 62-66mph with 1/7 shape. Hit from a closed off stance, cutting himself off at times. Natural pop at 93mph with a middle approach. Showed some ability to lift baseball. His body & overall potential made for a good follow going into the spring high school season.

Today, Vasquez has started to make some jumps especially on the hill where we recently saw & gathered data on him sitting 85-87mph with his FB. He's even topped out as high as 90mph with maximum effort in his delivery. His secondary pitches complement his fastball well and are continuing to develop, making for a solid 3-pitch mix. His CH shows some sink and CV has shown above average potential with 1/7 shape. He's has really learned to use his body & athleticism while gain more separation throughout his delivery. This has made him a bit more erratic but has also increased his velocity. He has the athleticism and enough feel to clean it up. As he learns to control his body, Vasquez could be one of the most improved pitchers in the state as of late. Vasquez has the make-up to be one of the top uncommitted LHP prospects in AZ and should be followed closely when we get back on diamond.

Showed some ability to lift baseball. On the mound, showed a smooth delivery with some body control, landing athletic. Flat footwork in the infield, slowing his body down. Raw when it comes to reads and taking angles. 67mph arm strength across the diamond. Threw strikes down in the zone from a H ¾  arm slot with a quick arm. Showed some feel for 3 pitches. Ball jumped out of the hand on straight FB, sitting 80-83mph with occasional late run. CV showed above average potential at 62-66mph with 1/7 shape. High spin CH showed some sink down.  His body & overall potential should make for a good follow over course of the spring & summer.
