Progress Report: 2022 OF/LHP Andrew Mings

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

PBR has had the chance to dig through the players and numbers from the summer where we have seen several players make some significant jumps as of late. Today, we will be taking a look at a "Progress Report" feature that highlights players that have shown significant improvement in their game; whether it's on the mechanical end, performance wise, physicality or in the measurable statistic department. The "Progress Report" can be a minor improvement in recent months or a substantial transformation over time. Today, we will be taking a look at 2022 OF/LHP Andrew Mings (Chaparral).

2022 OF/LHP Andrew Mings (Chaparral) uncommitted, attended two PBR events this summer, most recently at our Summer Review this past Sunday. He also attended our 2022 Top Prospect Games back in mid June. Mings continues to make progress in several areas and looks a bit better every time we see him. His performance as of late recently got him highlighted in our "5 to Know: 2022 OFs" segment, highlighting five players that were in conversation for Team Arizona at the PBR Future Games.

We first saw Mings at a PBR event back in December of 2019, where he showed as an athletic OF with plenty of maturing left. He wasn't quiet there physically just yet in his young frame but you could tell there was athleticism and some quality baseball actions present that would help him develop quickly.

Today, Mings still shows some projectability in his 6-foot 175-pound frame, but hes gotten noticeably stronger in the last 8 months, gaining probably close to 10lbs of strength. He shows some upside as a two-way potential player that should continue to progress on both sides of the ball. He's gained over 10mph of arm strength from the OF since December at 86 & 87mph arm strength at recent events. He's also been working up to 84mph on the mound from the left side with a clean athletic delivery. His left-handed swing is fluid and shows significant upside. He has some feel for the barrel and the pop/ contact is progressing with his body strength. His exit velocity in December was 69mph and has climbed up to 82mph in June and now 87mph this past Sunday. His athleticism makes him a more than capable OF, running in the lows 7's. Mings should continue to be a player to follow in near future.

Scouting Report

6/24/20

5-foot-11 170-pounds, large frame, lean body, good athleticism & projectability. Has gained at least 10-pounds of strength and has made positive strides since we last saw him in December. Left-handed hitting two-way player, starts from an athletic balanced base, slightly open stance. Uses a forward move, landing square, slightly closed at times. Simple level swing with some bat speed. Middle LD approach. Showed some ability to lift the ball, hitting a lofted ground rule double in our live game action. Hit a ball 89mph in his live BP round. Athletic footwork in the OF, fields ball on the side. Used a step behind while gaining some direction towards his target, 87mph arm strength. Also worked out on the mound. Smooth controlled delivery with easy effort, showed some arm speed from a H ¾ arm slot. Consistent athletic balance point, lands square with athletic finish. Sat 79-83mph with his FB, arm side command. Early action on his 1/7 CV at 68-71mph. High upside that should be followed.

12/15/19

Large 5’11” 165lbs build, above average athlete & overall actions, defined lower half. LHH with short inverted swing path. Got started a little late. Gap to Gap approach. Gets taller in finish at times. Athleticism plays in the OF. Good pre pitch movement with quick first step. Lefty thrower. Plays through ball creating carry on throws. Light on his feet. Ran a 7.25 60 yard dash. Follow OF prospect over next few years.
