High School Crosscheck: March 21-26

The Anaheim Lions Tournament is a staple in Southern California, routinely featuring noteworthy teams in the region, as well some from out of state. Fourteen years ago, I saw the likes of Aaron Hicks and Zach Collier--a couple of top 50 picks--as well as other high school stars. I returned last week to see another potential top 50 pick in LHP Robby Snelling (McQueen HS, NV). A multi-sport athlete who had some interest as an outside linebacker, he certainly looks the part at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds. In 6.1 innings, he fanned 14 and allowed an unearned run on two hits. While he didn’t bump the mid-90s heat we’ve heard about, he did maintain his velo throughout, holding 88-91 and touching 92 late. The breaking ball was the separator, showing late, sharp break and depth at times. He threw a ton of strikes and if his background as a football star isn’t enough evidence of his athleticism, he demonstrated it in game by pouncing on a bunt and throwing the runner out at first. He didn’t throw a changeup in game, but showed feel for one in the bullpen. If the velo ticks up and he continues to throw that breaking ball consistently, he’ll put himself in the conversation as one of the better prep lefties in the country and have Louisiana State sweating the draft.
