GBG Arizona Scout Day: Infield Analysis
February 14, 2018
The GBG Arizona PBR Scout Day took place on Sunday, January 7th at Liberty HS in Peoria. The event featured prospects from the 2019-2022 classes and gave all players in the organization an opportunity to be evaluated by PBR and considered for future invite-only events. Today, we continue our positional analysis with the infielders. Complete video, data, pictures and scouting reports have been posted to players' individual profiles. As always contact [email protected] or direct message @PBRArizona on Twitter with any questions and/or information.
2020 Trevor Long is our top infield prospect, after turning in the top testing numbers in nearly every category at the event and taking the most electric round of BP on the day. Long is a legitimate two-way prospect and will be a major factor in our updated 2020 rankings. Behind Long is a close group of 2021 prospects in Cayden Collins, Aaron Limon and Kaden Schiefelbein. Collins does everything little bit easier than the other two, earning him the nod, while Limon is easily the most physical and the best present athlete of the three.
TOP Infield PROSPECTS
Trevor Long SS / RHP / Chaparral , AZ / 2020Lean 6-foot-1, 165-pound frame with all around fast-twitch ability. Long was a standout performer in nearly every area and cemented himself as a guy that will be highly ranked when 2020 rankings are updated in February. A legitimate two-way prospect, he worked 84-85 with his mostly straight fastball, using a compact, low effort delivery with a high ¾ arm slot and the type of arm speed that indicates more velo is on the way. He also mixed in a sharp 71-72 mph curveball with tight rotation and late 11-5 break as well as a developing mid 70’s slider that backed up at times. His 75-77 mph changeup is already a weapon as he maintains arm speed and gets some late tumbling action on the pitch. Offensively, Long shows has a very loose swing, generating easy pop you wouldn’t expect from a 165-pound 2020 grad. He has an advanced rhythm, uses his lower half well and turned in an impressive 91 mph exit velo. Defensively there are some questions where he profiles best, possibly 3B or in the outfield, but he’s an athletic mover and threw 85 mph from SS. Also ran solid 6.96 60-yard dash.

Cayden Collins RHP / SS / Joy Christian, AZ / 2021Projectable, high-waisted 6-foot-1, 165-pound frame with broad shoulders. Will certainly be one to follow moving forward. Two-way prospect is currently more advanced as a RHP where he ran his fastball up to 79 with very little effort. Uses slight across body delivery and low ¾ arm slot to produce good angles on all of his pitches. Also mixed in 67-68 mph curveball with short, 11-5 break and 69-70 mph changeup with fading action despite inconsistent arm speed. Collins also shows soft hands on the infield and is an effortless mover, throwing 79 mph across the diamond from a lower arm slot. He consistently found the barrel with his flat bat path and produced 81 mph exit velocity that will jump significantly with increased physical strength. 7.38 60-yard dash. |
Aaron Limon SS / RHP / Liberty, AZ / 2021Possesses plenty of present strength in 5-foot-10, 165-pound frame. Limon put his arm strength on display with an 80-81 mph fastball with a high-tempo delivery and short arm action. 69-72 mph curveball has downward break, almost backing up on him at times. Also threw 73-76 mph changeup with good arm speed that flashed sinking action. Has some twitch in his body and also turned in an 85 mph exit velo and 6.94 60-yard dash. Really tries to create a deep barrel turn and produces an uphill path with a narrow base. Could be on the barrel more consistently by creating a wider base and flattening his path. 77 mph infield velocity with short arm action. Posted impressive numbers across the board for an incoming freshman. |
Kaden Schiefelbein 3B / RHP / Liberty, AZ / 2021Currently a long ways off physically, but shows feel and a clean arm action on the mound to go along with some hitting ability. His present 5-foot-11, 130-pound frame will certainly undergo significant change in the coming years, and significant projection remains. Ceiling appears to be higher on the mound where he threw his fastball downhill through the bottom of the strike zone at 75-77 mph. Almost 3-piece arm action, but maintains fluidity and gets on top of the baseball quickly on the back side. Flashed short tight breaking ball in the upper 60’s that could become put away pitch as it becomes more consistent in terms of rotation and shape. 70-71 mph changeup was in the strike zone and flashed fading action. Offensively, hits from balanced setup, creating a wide base with his stride. Slight uphill path to high finish; some explosiveness in lower half. 77 mph exit velocity. Does a solid job playing underneath and through the baseball on the infield. Third base actions. Higher arm slot makes it difficult to throw on the run; 76 mph infield velo. Solid 7.29 60-yard dash for present body type. |
Andrew Villalobos C / 3B / N/A, AZ / 20225-foot-5, 150-pound frame. Clearly the top catch and throw guy in attendance, posting a best pop time of 2.00 and consistently putting the ball on the bag. Shows strong footwork, a quick transfer and short arm action to turn in extremely impressive times for a 2022 catcher. An advanced receiver, Villalobos also showed well on the infield with solid action and 77 mph velo across the diamond. Gets out over front side with his swing, driving aggressively off his back side to make plenty of hard contact to the pull side. Looking to lift; 82 mph exit velocity. Posted 7.57 60-yard dash. A very polished young prospect. |
