Five Uncommitted 2019 Left-Handed Pitchers

Jordon Banfield
Arizona Scouting Director

As our fall events in Arizona are fast approaching, we will spend lots of time in September highlighting some of the best available 2019 prospects in the state. Without any D2 or D3 programs in the state, tons of very solid players remain uncommitted and most will be at the Unsigned Senior Showcase on 10/10 at Sunnyslope HS. Limited space for the event remains and you can REGISTER HERE.

Today we look at five left-handed pitchers capable of being solid contributors at the next level; possible D1 types and definite high-level Juco/D2 players. All of these prospects have consistently performed at a high level in live game action as well as at previous PBR events. Full report are included with full video available in individual profiles for PBR PLUS subscribers.

Scouting Report

6/27/18 - 5-foot-10, 155-pound frame. Athletic with significant room to add strength and mass. Marshall showed the ability to get outs all spring at Queen Creek, working mostly in the high-70's and low-80's with a breaking ball in the zone. Marshall is a very solid athlete (6.95 60-yard dash) and really defends 1B and RF; 84 mph infield velocity, 88 mph outfield velocity. Offensively he shows some ability as well with a very simple swing that he repeats well and some whippy bat speed; 87 mph exit velocity. However, Marshall is starting to look more like a college pitcher as he touched 85 mph on this day and could be a nightmare for LHH out of the bullpen in college. Long arm action, present arm speed, low ¾ release. Rides momentum down the mound before aggressively firing back leg into internal rotation. Fastball ranged from 83-85 mph featuring life to his arm side. Breaking was thrown at 72-74 mph with varying shape depending on the arm angle. With the lower ¾ release the pitch featured two-plane break. At other times the arm slot would climb and feature more ⅙ shape. Natural arm slot is probably more conducive for a true slider.

5/20/18 - 5-foot-10, 155-pound frame. The proven high school performer on the mound showed well on both sides of the ball on this day. Marshall sat 81-83 mph with his fastball from a lower angle with a cross-body delivery that should make him very tough on LHH. Marshall also showed an ability to pour his 70-71 mph curveball over for strikes and should have value as a college reliever. The 75-77 mph changeup is a developing third pitch as he left it to the arm side at times and also cut it at others. He may have shown even better as a position player where his 7.00 60, 84 mph infield velo, 86 mph outfield velo (with very strong carry) and 89 mph exit velo were all near the top measurable posted on the day. Marshall hits with a narrow lower half, which can create some inconsistencies and could drive the baseball more consistently if he created a more solid base. He shows a relaxed, easy rhythm in the box and some surprising pop for his current body type.

Scouting Report

6/27/18 - 6-foot-1, 175 pound frame. Brown showed some interesting abilities as projectable left hander running his fastball up to 84 mph using a low ¾ release. Fully extended arm swing, arm appeared late getting up at times. Quick hip, rotational lower half. Considerable amount of trunk flexion at ball release over a locked out, stabilized front leg. Overall tempo and rhythm could improve. Change up flashed impressive fading action at 74-76 mph. Slider ranged from 71-75 mph with and inconsistent rotation. Also showed a cutter at 78 mph that could develop into an effective weapon. Brown has the arsenal to be very tough on left handed hitters at the next level with continued development and refinement.

1/28/18 - 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame. Filled up the zone with sinking 81-84, T85 mph fastball that turned in to a bunch of ground ball outs. Lots of moving parts in delivery, tilting his shoulders and closing off his upper half to hide the baseball. Some head violence through release. Not a comfortable at-bat for hitters. Proven ability to get outs. Both secondary offerings were inconsistent on this day. 71-74 mph slider was his preferred pitch after the fastball and showed loose rotation. 70-74 mph changeup was seldom used. Development of secondary offerings will dictate what level prospect he becomes. Has made recent velo jump and has consistently shown ability to get outs with his sinker.

Scouting Report

8/7/18 - Ran fastball up to 86 at Area Code Games.

3/9/18 - Part of a loaded Mesquite rotation, Clarkson struggled some with command on the day but really stood out offensively and has turned himself into a legitimate two-way prospect. The physical LHH blasted a long home run and showed an interested combination of strength and a short swing that could translate to the college level. On the mound, he topped out at 84 with a clean arm action, open-toe landing position and some head violence through release. He also showed a big sweeping breaking ball that was tough on LHH and a sinking change at 71.

Scouting Report

6/27/18 - 6-foot-2, 155-pound frame. Very thin, projectable body. Controlled tempo, tall and fall style of mechanics. Could engage lower half more. Ran his fastball up to 84 mph from a ¾ arm slot. Curveball was thrown with fastball arm speed at 70-73 mph with â shape. Change up was firm at 75 mph and flashed sinking action. Isaacs' arm works well and will be an intriguing follow as his body continues to mature and add strength/mass. Very interesting developmental prospect.

Scouting Report

6/27/18 - 5-foot-9, 150 pound frame. Bohnert isn't the most physical pitcher in the class, but he comfortably sat 84-87, touching 88 and showed the ability to fill up the strike zone with three pitches. Bohnert has previously looked more like a D2 or juco guy, but the huge velo jump may change that in a hurry. Does a great job creating and transferring energy up his body to ball release. Breaking ball was thrown at 70-71 mph mph with fastball arm speed and is used more as a get me over type pitch. Showed feel for his change up at 74-77 mph and featured it heavily in live game action, flashing real sink. Bohnert also worked out as a position player where he displayed a solid swing from the left side. Narrow, open stance, leg kick trigger, slight uphill swing path; 81 mph exit velocity. Defensively best profiles as a corner outfielder. Posted a 7.58 60-yard dash and an 84 mph outfield velocity. Bohnert’s future on the mound as an undersized, left handed, mid-to-upper 80’s strike thrower should be his ticket to the next level.

12/27/17 - 5-foot-8, 150-pound frame. Two-way prospect showed best on the mound where he worked 79-81, touching 82 with his fastball from a high ¾ arm slot. Utilized a compact delivery, raising his hands very high before they break. Showed a 62-63 mph curveball with 1-7 shape and 67-70 mph changeup that he tended to leave to the arm side. Offensively shows good rhythm in the box, using a leg-lift trigger and slight uphill bat path to make solid contact to CF and the pull side during his round of BP. Looks to lift the baseball; 82 mph exit velocity. Also threw accurately from the outfield with 84 mph velo.
