Birmingham Rising Stars ID: Quick Hits

Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

GARDENDALE, AL - The Birmingham Rising Stars ID was held on Wednesday, June 26th at Gardendale High School in Gardendale, AL. This event was an open event hosting some talented prospects from the 2028-2029 classes in Alabama. These players went through extended pro-style workout that included batting practice using Trackman and Blast Motion, ran the 60-yard dash using Swift Performance, and much more. Pitchers were able to throw during a simulated bullpen and were able to get numbers and metrics off of our Trackman unit, such as pitch velocity, spin rate, horizontal & vertical movement & much more. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing this week.

Kicking off our post-event coverage for this event, we dive into some of the top performers from the event. Please continue to check back over the next week, as we will release quick hits articles, other various event leaderboards, individual scouting reports, and much more on each player present at the event.

Sawyer Downey OF / 1B / Vestavia Hills High School, AL / 2028

5-foot-11, 144-pounds. Lean, athletic frame with plenty of projectable strength to come in the future. Showcased one of the cleaner left-handed swings we've seen from a prospect of his age, which consistently delivered firm contact to the baseball while working to the pull-side of the field during his round of BP. Possesses good balance and stays well-connected throughout the stroke, allowing his barrel to work on an upward path and stay on the baseball through contact. Ball jumps off fairly easy for a prospect of his age and will continue to hit for higher exits with power potential down the road. Registered numerous mid-80 readings with a top EV of 88.4 mph, an event-best. Athletic in the outfield and working around the first base bag during the defensive workout. Has some arm strength from the outfield with accuracy on throws to the plate. Good runner clocking a 7.18 60-yard dash, another event-best. Certainly a name to circle for the next few years in Alabama.

Hudson Mitchell RHP / SS / Hewitt-Trussville High School, AL / 2028

5-foot-10, 171-pounds. Athletic, well-developed frame for a prospect of his age with some scattered strength and more to come. Possesses two-way intrigue and has ability from both sides of the plate as a switch-hitter. Appears to be more natural hitting from the right side of the plate, but still was able to find consistent barrels on both sides with multiple low-80 EVs. Hands stay short allowing the barrel to work clean to contact. Above-average bat speed for his age while showcasing a more line-drive approach with consistent firm contact to the pull-side during his round of BP. Also a skilled defender up the middle with athletic actions. Doubles as a talented right-handed pitcher who actually saw important time on the mound for the Huskies this spring, including a relief appearance in their final area series where he was effective in the low-80s. Still plenty of development and physical maturity to come down the road, but another exciting young rising freshman with sizable upside.

Brently Boshers OF / C / Hewitt-Trussville High School, AL / 2028

5-foot-8, 140-pounds. Lean, athletic build. Another skilled rising freshman in the class who showcased some exciting ability on both sides of the ball during his Prep Baseball showcase debut. Really displayed a knack for finding the sweet spot throughout his round of BP while delivering consistent line drives and hard groundballs to all parts of the field. Hits from an athletic stance and controls the barrel through the zone hitting from the right side. Clean defender in the outfield during the defensive workout, showcasing good lateral range and the ability to attack the ball on the run and deliver accurate throws to the plate. Appears to be a solid, well-rounded rising freshman with quality skills in multiple facets of his games.
