Alabama HS Team Preview: Wilson Warriors

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason top-10 rankings in each AHSAA classification.

Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week, updating the top-10 ranks in each AHSAA classification, as well updating our Power 25 overall rankings. One thing, especially, you don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state, as well as the recaps and previews of the big games we’re covering.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Wilson Warriors are looking to take a big step forward in 2024 with plenty of key pieces on their roster returning for the senior seasons. The Warriors unfortunately missed out on the playoffs in Class 4A, but return 12 seniors this spring, four of which have been starters since their freshman seasons. 

The Warriors, who compete in an area with four competitive clubs, finished the 2023 season with a 13-18 record and missed out on the playoffs, but this spring, there's plenty of optimism that those players who have been starting for mutliple years will help this program take a big leap in Class 4A. Returning a total of seven positional starters and six pitchers certainly helps, as those returners are going to be expected to lead the team both on the diamond and in the locker room. The Warriors have a strong core of senior returners, and it all starts with OF Gage Wilson (Gadsden State CC, 2024), who is a talented left-handed hitter that returns to the heart of the order. UTL/RHP Eli Smith (2024) is another senior garnering interest from college programs, while 1B Nate Nester (2024), OF/RHP Easton Wallander (2024), OF Everett Roberson (2024), and DH Jack Inman (2024) are all key returning pieces who will be expected to provide valuable contributions both at the plate and on the mound. The Warriors also featured some younger players last spring who were able to get their feet wet playing at the varsity level, and hope that will pay off this spring with that experience. Some of those underclassmen to watch for this spring are RHP/3B Cayden McCormack (2026), SS/RHP Jack Darby (2026), RHP/INF Bryson Pickens (2026), and C/RHP Brodie Pruitt (2026).

The Warriors are expecting to have a very successful season this spring, and believes one of their strengths will be their team chemistry. Many of these players have been playing together for a good amount of time, so that should only benefit them this spring. They'll compete in Area 15 against Central-Florence, Deshler, and Hamilton for a berth in the playoffs at the end of the regular season. Expect Wilson take a sizable step forward in Class 4A in 2024.
