The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason top-10 rankings in each AHSAA classification.

Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week, updating the top-10 ranks in each AHSAA classification, as well updating our Power 25 overall rankings. One thing, especially, you don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state, as well as the recaps and previews of the big games we’re covering.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Holtville Bulldogs enjoyed a historic 2023 season capturing the Class 5A State Championship by defeating Sardis in the championship series. They've consistently made deep runs over the past few seasons and were able to cap it off last year, but look ready to start the quest of defending their state title in 2024.

The Bulldogs, who start off at No. 4 in our preseason poll in Class 5A, appear to be strong once again this season returning six positional starters and seven pitchers who saw time on the mound last spring. They should boast plenty of depth on their pitching staff and believes that should be one of their main team strengths this season. Looking at this year's roster, SS/RHP Drey Barrett (Southern Miss, 2024) is a top-10 prospect in the 2024 class and played a vital role in helping lead the Bulldogs to the state title last year. The senior looks poised for another strong season both at the plate and on the mound this season. 1B/RHP Markus Broderick (2024) 3B/RHP Braxton Potts (2024), C Randy Bridges (2024), OF Bryce Watson (2024), and RHP/3B Drew Connor (2024) are all also seniors who bring back plenty of valuable experience at the varsity level, and will look to provide leadership for the Bulldogs this spring. A couple other players who are hoping to step into bigger roles this spring are LHP/OF AJ Carreon (2024), INF Hudson Parson (2024), OF Jayse Price (2025), LHP/1B Carson McCutchin (2025), and OF Cedrick Croskey (2025), who are upperclassmen with the talent to help out this year's team. The Bulldogs also feature some talented younger prospects who may not be proven or have much experience at the varsity level, but are talented enough to make an impact this spring. Some of those underclassmen to watch for this spring are C Gage Nelson (2026), RHP/OF Madison Curry (2026), and OF/RHP Kelan Kimbro.

Entering the season in 2024, the Bulldogs should carry the target on their back after last year's run to the state championship, but it looks like they'll be prepared once again for another strong season. They'll compete in Area 7 against Jemison and Marbury for a berth in the playoffs at the end of the regular season. Holtville has become a staple in Class 5A over the past few seasons, and this year looks to be the same.
