AL/MS Border Battle: Alabama Quick Hits, Pitchers

Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

BOONEVILLE, MS - The AL/MS Border Battle was held on Saturday, October 12th and Sunday, October 13th at Northeast Mississippi CC in Booneville, MS. This event was an invite-only event hosting some talented prospects from the 2025-2028 classes in Alabama. These players went through extended pro-style workout that included batting practice using Trackman and Blast Motion, ran the 60-yard dash using Swift Performance, and much more. Pitchers were able to throw during gameplay and were able to get numbers and metrics off of our Trackman unit, such as pitch velocity, spin rate, horizontal & vertical movement while facing live hitters in simulated innings. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing this week.

Continuing our post-event coverage for this event, we look at some of the top overall performers from the event. Please continue to check back over the next week, as we will release quick hits articles, other various event leaderboards, individual scouting reports, and much more on each player present at the event.

Brenner VanDeWynckel LHP / OF / Sparkman, AL / 2026

Uncommitted. 6-foot-1, 178-pounds. Primary left-handed pitcher with some two-way intrigue. Lean build with some room to add and fill out. Tossed three stress-free innings of work on the mound for Team Alabama and showed the innate ability to mix and change speeds in any count. Fastball operated 80-83 mph and touched 83.9 mph early on in the outing and plays up a bit due to the ability to mix off-speed offerings earlier in the count. Not afraid to drive the pitch to the inner-half against right-handed hitters. Features two distinct breaking balls; curveball ranging 73-75 mph showing more 1-7 shape and slider at 75-78 mph that features tighter spin and shorter, lateral break. Can also turn over a diving changeup at 73-76 mph. Well-rounded four-pitch mix and has high feel and pitch-ability. Can provide some deception hiding the ball and coming out of a quick 3/4 slot. Can swing it from the left side of the plate, too.

Jackson (Chappy) Chapleau RHP / 1B / Homewood, AL / 2027

Uncommitted. 5-foot-9, 206-pounds. Thick, durable build with tons of present strength scattered throughout. Appears to be a highly-competitve pitcher with excellent strike-throwing ability. Impressed at the Alabama Fall Games in August and continues to throw up "zeros" during gameplay at this past weekend's event. Short, compact arm action with H 3/4 arm slot. Pitched mostly at 80-83 mph and touched 84.8 mph with some natural arm-side run. Plenty of confidence in 70-73 mph breaking ball with 11-5 depth, which was consistently landed for strikes and also beneath the zone late in counts for chase. Also mixed in 76-78 mph changeup with fading action and profiles well off of the fastball as a third offering. Attacks hitters with strikes and floods the zone with his three-pitch mix. Also a physical right-handed hitter who posted a top EV of 98.7 mph.

Hayden Schell RHP / 1B / Hazel Green, AL / 2027

Uncommitted. 6-foot-2, 230-pounds. Projectable build with physical, imposing frame. Still plenty of physical maturation to come down the road. Tossed three scoreless innings of work on Sunday while showing off a quality three-pitch mix in the process. Fastball operated 80-83 mph and topped at 84.2 mph with an average of 17.4 in. of induced vertical break. Spins sharp-biting curveball ranging 69-72 mph well. Showcases big 11-5 shape and registered spin rates near 2500 RPM. Was able to land it in the zone and induce weak contact. Changeup ranged 75-76 mph with plenty of arm-side action. Has an over-the-top arm slot, allowing the fastball to ride and create carry at the top of the zone. Has previously been up to 88 mph in the summer with future jumps likely for the physical right-hander.
