Underclass Games Scout Blog: Infielders

We continue to take a position by position analysis of the Underclass Games today by rounding up the scouting analysis with the 23 infielders that were present at the event. A few showed off some legit arm strength from their positions on the infield as well as handling the bat well. Some of those strong arms also jumped on the mound to showcase their stuff on the bump as well. Here are the infielders...

 
Sam Robertson: SS, (2023) Oxford, AL. 6-foot-1, 165-pound mature frame. Performed well in the 60-yard dash, clocking a speedy time of 6.64. Began in an open stance with a controlled load, then used a small leg kick to initiate his swing. Has upward swing plane, explosive bat speed and good extension on his finish. Barreled up multiple balls with loud contact. Gap to gap approach. Robertson's 90 mph exit velocity showed his ability to drive the ball with power. Smooth in the infield, had a live arm with throws that topped out at 85 mph; had athletic footwork, a quick exchange and next Level hands. Showed an-over-the-top slot with a very quick arm action.
 
Frederick Wessel: SS/RHP, (2022) Randolph, AL. 6-foot, 170-pound solid frame. Recorded a time of 7.25 in the 60-yard dash. Starts in a tall stance with a small load, then uses a controlled stride to initiate his swing. Bat speed was efficient, displayed rotational swing plane and high finish. Barreled up some balls with some loud contact. Pull side approach. the right-handed hitter's best exit velocity was 85 mph. While in the infield, made throws at velocities up to 84 mph; had consistent hands, fluid footwork and a quick exchange. Showed consistent accuracy to the bag and a high ¾ slot. Smooth on the mound, showed a ¾ arm angle with consistent arm speed. Uses easy effort in his delivery. Produced a fastball that came in at 81-82 mph and topped out at 83 mph; showed sinking action and very consistent command with heavy movement. Threw a 11/5 curveball (74-75) with sweeping action and glove side control. Has control low in the zone and fading action on his changeup (73-74).
 
Drey Barrett: SS/2B, (2024) Holtville, AL. 6-foot-1, 165-pound athletic frame. Clocked a time of 7.95 in the 60-yard dash. Begins in an open stance with a compact load, then uses a leg kick just before his swing. Had short swing plane, efficient bat speed and high finish. Found a couple of barrels in his round. Up the middle approach. Barrett's best exit velocity was 81 mph. In the infield, his best throw was recorded at 83 mph; showed rhythmic feet and sure hands. Had consistent accuracy to the bag with a high ¾ slot. On the mound, has a high ¾ arm angle and a loose arm action. Uses some effort in his delivery. Produced a fastball that came in at 71-72 mph and topped out at 73 mph; shows very consistent command and running action with heavy movement. He threw a 12/6 curveball (61-62).
 
Braden Booth: 3B/RHP, (2024) Bob Jones, AL. 6-foot, 170-pound sturdy frame. Recorded a 60 time of 7.97 at the event. Starts in an open stance with a controlled load, then uses a controlled stride just before his swing. Bat speed was above average, used simple swing plane and good extension on his finish. Was able to create a lot of loud contact and found multiple barrels. Pull side approach. Booth had an exit velocity of 82 mph. Above average in the infield, his position velocity was registered at 81 mph; has consistent feet, a packing clean exchange and sure consistent hands. Used an-over-the-top slot with a long arm action while showing consistent accuracy to the base.
 
Matt Manley: 3B/RHP, (2023) Madison Academy, AL. 6-foot, 160-pound athletic frame. In the 60-yard dash, his time was 7.47. Began in an open stance with a smooth load, then used a small leg kick just before his swing. Bat speed is efficient, has level swing plane and good extension on his finish. He found multiple barrels with a lot of loud contact. Gap to gap approach. the right-handed hitter's best exit velocity was 87 mph. In the infield, his position velocity was registered at 81 mph; has consistent hands and developing feet. Showed consistent accuracy to the bag with a loose arm action and a high ¾ slot. On the mound, showing above average arm speed he had a ¾ arm angle and a long arm action. Shows easy effort in his delivery. Threw his fastball 82-84 mph with a max of 85 mph; showed running action and very consistent control. Had sweeping action and consistent command on his 11/5 curveball (65-66). Has fading action and command low in the zone on his changeup (73-74).
 
Matthew Cash: SS/RHP, (2024) Bibb County, AL. 5-foot-9, 155-pound athletic frame. In the 60-yard dash, recorded a time of 7.94. Begins in a tall stance with a smooth load, then uses a controlled stride to initiate his swing. Bat speed is above average, exhibits rotational swing plane and high finish. He barreled up multiple balls. Gap to gap approach. Cash recorded an exit velocity of 81 mph. While in the infield, made throws up to 80 mph; showed consistent hands, athletic feet and a clean exchange. Consistent accuracy to the bag, used a high ¾ slot and a quick arm action. On the mound, showing above average arm speed he had a ¾ arm angle and a loose arm action. Showed easy effort in his delivery. Produced a fastball that came in at 74-76 mph with a max of 77 mph; had cutting action and very consistent command. Throws a 11/5 curveball (63-64) with consistent command.

Peyton Watts: SS/2B, (2023) Oxford, AL. 5-foot-11, 150-pound projectable frame. Recorded a 60 time of 7.55 at the event. Sets up in an open stance with a leg kick. Bat speed was explosive, displayed upward swing plane and high finish. Barreled up multiple balls throughout the round. Pull side approach. the left-handed hitter had a max exit velocity of 87 mph. Advanced in the infield, displayed a velocity of 78 mph; shows athletic feet, next Level hands and a quick exchange. Showed a high ¾ slot and a short arm action with consistent accuracy to the bag. 

Sam Silas: SS/RHP, (2023) Holtville, AL. 6-foot, 160-pound sturdy frame. At the plate, the right-handed hitter clocked an exit velocity of 85 mph. Started in a balanced stance with a smooth load, then used a controlled stride before his swing. Had upward swing plane, explosive bat speed and good extension on his finish. In the round he found multiple barrels. Gap to gap approach. In the infield, his best throw was recorded at 78 mph; shows sure hands, a quick exchange and rhythmic feet. Had an-over-the-top slot with a long arm action. Clocked a time of 7.4 in the 60-yard dash. 

Payne Bryan: 3B/RHP, (2023) Springville, AL. 5-foot-11, 181-pound physical frame. Clocked a time of 7.37 in the 60-yard dash. Began in an open stance with a controlled load, then used a short stride before his swing. Had rotational swing plane, and his bat speed was above average. Barreled up multiple balls during his round. Pull side approach. Bryan showed his power ability with an exit velocity of 90 mph. In the infield, his best throw was recorded at 77 mph; showed consistent feet, a natural exchange and sure hands. Showed a long arm action with consistent accuracy to the base.

Carter Wells: 3B/RHP, (2023) Sparkman, AL. 6-foot-2, 185-pound athletic frame. In the 60-yard dash, he clocked a time of 8.09. Begins in an open stance with a controlled load, then uses a small leg kick to initiate his swing. Has above average bat speed and has good extension on his finish. He found multiple barrels in his rounds. Up the middle approach. the right-handed hitter's 93 mph exit velocity showed his ability to drive the ball with power. In the infield, his best throw was registered at 76 mph; had developing footwork and raw hands. Has an-over-the-top slot. On the mound, has a high ¾ angle. Drop-and-drive type pitcher and uses easy effort. Shows a clean finish. Threw his fastball 78-79 mph with a max of 80 mph; shows low in the zone control with heavy movement. Has a 12/6 curveball (66-67) that showed very consistent control and swing and miss action. 

Austin Wilson: 3B/1B, (2023) Shelby County, AL. 6-foot-3, 200-pound mature frame. Recorded a time of 7.79 in the 60-yard dash. Starts in a closed stance with a compact load, then uses a leg kick to start his swing. Bat speed is efficient, has upward swing plane and high finish. In the round he found multiple barrels. Wilson showed his power in the box with a strong exit velocity of 89 mph. Fluid in the infield, his best throw was registered at 76 mph; has a natural exchange and consistent footwork. Used a long arm action and an-over-the-top slot. 

Eli Davenport: 2B/SS, (2022) Ranburne, AL. 5-foot-11, 140-pound lean frame. During batting practice, the left-handed hitter had a max exit velocity of 81 mph. Started in a tall quiet stance with a controlled load, then used a small leg kick to initiate his swing. Had rotational swing plane, and his bat speed was raw. Found some barrels in his round. Gap to gap approach. In the infield, his position velocity was registered at 76 mph; has consistent feet and soft hands. Showed a long arm action and an-over-the-top slot with decent accuracy to the bag. In the 60-yard dash, recorded a time of 7.87.

Miles Mitchell: SS/2B, (2023) Helena, AL. 5-foot-11, 165-pound athletic frame. Clocked a time of 7.49 in the 60-yard dash. Starts in a balanced stance with a quick load, then uses a toe tap to start his swing. Bat speed was quick, had upward swing plane and high finish. Found multiple barrels during his round. Mitchell had an exit velocity of 82 mph. Above average while in the infield, made throws up to 75 mph; shows sure hands, athletic feet and a clean exchange. Showed a long arm action and an-over-the-top slot with consistent accuracy to the bag. 

Sloan Smith: 2B/SS, (2023) Piedmont, AL. 5-foot-8, 155-pound lean frame. During the event, recorded a 60 time of 7.61. Setup included open athletic stance and a small leg kick. Bat speed was efficient, and showed upward short swing plane. Had some loud contact and found some barrels. Gap to gap approach. Smiths best exit velocity was 76 mph. In the infield, his best throw was registered at 75 mph; has consistent hands, a clean exchange and smooth feet. Used a high ¾ slot with a short arm action. 

Randy Davis: LHP/1B, (2023) Holtville, AL. 6-foot-4, 195-pound physical frame. In the 60-yard dash, recorded a time of 7.89. Setup was comprised of a compact load and athletic balanced stance. Had flat swing plane and good extension on his finish. Had some loud contact during the round. Opposite field approach. Davis clocked an exit velocity of 87 mph. While in the infield, recorded position velocities up to 74 mph. On the mound, showed an over-the-top arm angle and consistent arm speed. Tall-and-fall type pitcher and uses easy effort. Sat with his fastball at 76-77 mph and topped out at 78 mph; had low in the zone command and fading action. Threw a 12/6 curveball (63-64) with in the zone command and late action. His changeup (68-69) had consistent command and fading action. 

Bryce Speakman: 2B/OF, (2023) Opelika, AL. 5-foot-8, 160-pound proportional frame. Clocked a 60 time of 7.52 at the event. Begins in a balanced stance with a smooth load, then uses a leg kick to initiate his swing. Bat speed was some, and displayed simple rotational swing plane. Found multiple barrels in his round. Up the middle approach. the left-handed hitters best exit velocity was 87 mph. In the infield, his best throw was registered at 74 mph; had consistent hands, smooth footwork and a clean exchange. Showed consistent accuracy to the base with an-over-the-top slot and a long arm action. 

Cade Moore: SS/3B, (2023) Lexington, AL. 5-foot-10, 185-pound projectable frame. During the event, recorded a 60 time of 7.72. Started in a balanced stance with a leg kick. Has short upward swing plane, efficient bat speed and good extension on his finish. Through his round he found some barrels. Moore recorded an exit velocity of 80 mph. In the infield, his best throw was recorded at 74 mph; showed sure hands, developing feet and a quick exchange. Showed a quick arm action and a high ¾ slot. 

Hayes Harrison: LHP/1B, (2023) Oxford, AL. 6-foot, 160-pound athletic frame. Clocked a time of 8.02 in the 60-yard dash. Sets up in a tall stance with a toe tap. Bat speed was average, and showed upward simple swing plane. Through his round he found some barrels. Up the middle approach. Harrisons best exit velocity was 81 mph. Projectable in the infield, his best throw was recorded at 73 mph; has developing feet, a quick exchange and sure hands. Had a consistent arm action and a high ¾ slot. 

Zander Davis: 3B/1B, (2023) Fort Walton Beach, FL. 6-foot-2, 180-pound physical frame. In the 60-yard dash, his time was 7.57. Started in an open stance with a compact load, then used a leg kick to start his swing. Has above average bat speed, upward simple swing plane and high finish. Produced some loud contact and found multiple barrels. the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 81 mph. While in the infield, made throws up to 72 mph; showed rhythmic feet, a quick exchange and consistent hands. Had consistent accuracy to the base with a very quick arm action. 

Harry Brown: 3B/OF, (2023) Bayside Academy, AL. 5-foot-10, 165-pound projectable frame. In the 60-yard dash, he clocked a time of 7.56. Started in an open balanced stance with a smooth load, then used a small leg kick before his swing. Bat speed is quick, displays uphill swing plane and high finish. He Barreled up some balls during the round. Brown had a max exit velocity of 79 mph. Projectable while in the infield, made throws at velocities up to 72 mph; had athletic footwork and consistent hands. 

Dalton Fink: RHP/3B, (2024) Oxford, AL. 5-foot-11, 160-pound proportional frame. Clocked a 60 time of 7.47 at the event. Setup includes open quiet stance and a quick load. Has quick bat speed and uphill short swing plane. He Barreled up some balls during the round. the right-handed hitter clocked an exit velocity of 78 mph. In the infield, his best throw was registered at 71 mph; has soft consistent hands and rhythmic feet. Had a very quick arm action and a high ¾ slot. Projectable on the mound, has a high ¾ arm angle with above average arm speed. Used easy effort in his delivery. Has athletic balance point. Threw his fastball 70-71 mph and topped out at 72 mph; had around the zone control and sinking action. Shows fading action and control low in the zone on his changeup (61-62). Shows swing and miss action on his tight curveball (63-64). 

Carson May: SS/3B, (2023) Central, AL. 5-foot-11, 158-pound proportional frame. Clocked a 60 time of 7.49 at the event. Starts in a balanced quiet stance with a compact load, then uses a toe tap just before his swing. Has short simple swing plane, above average bat speed and high finish. Barreled up some balls during his round. Up the middle approach. the right-handed hitter had an exit velocity of 75 mph. In the infield, recorded a position velocity of 70 mph; had fluid footwork, a natural exchange and soft hands. Showed consistent accuracy to the base and a consistent arm action. 

 

Morgan Turner: 3B/RHP, (2026) Helena, AL. 5-foot-8, 145-pound. In the 60-yard dash, his time was 8.87. Began in an open stance with a small load, then used a short stride to initiate his swing. Has efficient bat speed, uphill short swing plane and high finish. He Produced some loud contact during the round. Base hit approach. the right-handed hitters best exit velocity was 74 mph. In the infield, his best throw was registered at 64 mph; has developing feet, a clean exchange and consistent hands. Used a short arm action with an-over-the-top slot.
