South Alabama Select Scout Blog: Pitcher Only's and Catchers

We begin our position by position analysis today by taking a look at the catchers and pitcher only's from the South Alabama Select, held on July 14 at The Performance Lab in Mobile. The catchers went through a prostyle workout and then stayed around to be evaluated receiving pitches as the pitchers jumped on the mound to showcase their ability. Below is a complete run down on each catcher and pitcher only present.
Bryce Rivers: C/SS, (2026) Mobile Christian, AL. 5-foot-5, 140-pound projectable frame. At the plate, the right-handed hitter clocked an exit velocity of 76 mph. Started in an athletic stance with a smooth load, then used a leg kick. Has efficient bat speed. He Produced some loud contact and found multiple barrels. Line drive approach. While catching, consistently had pop times of 2.47-2.49, best position velocity throwing to second was registered at 68 mph; had average footwork, consistent hands and a clean exchange. Showed decent accuracy to the bag and a high ¾ slot. In the 60-yard dash, he clocked a time of 7.9.
Ben Plunkett: LHP, (2022) Baker, FL. 5-foot-10, 155-pound. On the mound, used an over-the-top angle. Shows some effort in his delivery. Consistent balance point. Displayed a clean finish Sat with his fastball at 77-78 mph with a max of 79 mph; shows in the zone control and cutting action. Shows command low in the zone and late action on his 2/8 curveball (69-73). Showed fading action and control around the zone on his changeup (73-74).
Harris Sullivan: LHP/OF, (2021) UMS Wright, AL. 5-foot-11, 140-pound. Confident on the mound, showed some arm speed with a high ¾ arm angle. Showed some effort in his delivery. Consistent balance point. Has a clean finish. Threw his fastball 74-76 mph and topped out at 77 mph; has sinking action and consistent control. Had fading action and control around the zone on his changeup (68-70).
Dominick Castronova: RHP/SS, (2021) Daphne, AL. 6-foot, 170-pound. Confident on the mound, showed a quick arm action and a high ¾ arm angle. Drop-and-drive type pitcher and uses some effort. Strong balance point. Threw his fastball 83-84 mph with a max of 85 mph; shows running action and very consistent control. He shows hard action and control low in the zone on his 11/5 curveball (73-76). Shows fading action and arm side command on his changeup (77-79). Up tempo delivery and very athletic actions on the mound.
Colton Wood: C/2B, (2022) Faith Academy, AL. 6-foot, 175-pound physical frame. At the plate, Wood showed his power ability with an exit velocity of 90 mph. Started in an open stance with a controlled load, then used a leg kick. Bat speed is explosive, uses upward swing plane and good extension on his finish. Found lots of barrels with some loud contact. Gap to gap approach. Behind the plate, displayed next-level catching ability by boasting a 1.85-1.90 pop time, in the infield, had a live arm with throws that topped out at 89 mph; has sure hands and consistent feet. His best throw downs of the day reached a max velocity of 80 mph; has soft hands, athletic feet and a quick exchange. A lot of flexibility and quiet setup.Showed consistent accuracy to the bases. Displayed speed and athleticism at the event, recording a 60 time of 6.83. A definite 2022 grad to keep an eye. Shows a ton of "plus" skills.
Logan Terry: C/3B, (2023) East Central, MS. 6-foot, 180-pound solid frame. During batting practice, the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 86 mph. Started in a balanced stance with a smooth load, then used a controlled stride to initiate his swing. Bat speed is efficient and has level swing plane. Found multiple barrels with some loud contact . Line drive approach. While catching, recorded pop times of 2.07-2.11, he made throws to second at velocities up to 71 mph; shows consistent hands, average feet and a fluid exchange. Used average flexibility. Showed decent accuracy to the bases. During the event, recorded a 60 time of 7.74.
Bryson Goff: LHP/1B, (2023) Saraland, AL. 6-foot-2, 190-pound. Projectable on the mound, has a consistent arm action. Used easy effort in his delivery. Displayed a clean finish Sat with his fastball at 75-76 mph with a max of 76 mph; showed consistent command and running action. Had tight action and very consistent control on his sharp curveball (59-63). His changeup (67-68) has fading action and in the zone control.
Jackson Smith: 1B/RHP, (2022) Saraland, AL. 6-foot-5, 230-pound physical frame. Projectable on the mound, uses a ¾ arm angle with a quick arm action. Showed some effort in his delivery. Showed downhill shoulders. Threw his fastball 84-85 mph and topped out at 85 mph; shows in the zone control with heavy movement. Threw his 11/5 curveball (72-73) with command low in the zone and tight action. Showed fading action and command low in the zone on his changeup (71-72). Very projectable 6'5 RHP that showed some definite tilt on the FB. Showed mutliple arm slots with the FB with the same velocity.
